Vicks vapor rub.... Very interesting therory
VICKS VAPOR RUB...TRY IT, IT WORKS I wish I'd known this when my family was young during winter colds and coughs. I am going to try it myself. Share with young parents. Isn't life strange. When we had a lecture on Essential Oils, they told us how the foot soles can absorb oils. Their example: Put garlic on your feet and within 20 minutes you can 'taste' it. Some of us have used Vicks Vaporub for years for everything from chapped lips to sore toes and many body parts in between. But I've never heard of this. And don't laugh, it works 100% of the time although the scientists at the Canada Research council (who discovered it) aren't sure why. To stop night time coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks Vaporub generously on the bott om of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks. Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly. I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in children as compared to alternative therapies like acupressure. Just happened to tune in A.M.Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs so,I listened. It was a surprise finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, in addition to have a soothing and ca lming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly. Polly tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, (incredibly annoying!) every few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough-free for hours every night that she used it. If you have grandchildren, pass it on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by the effect. IT ALSO WORKS AS RELIEF FOR MOSQUITO BITES!!! RUB A LITTLE ON THE BITE AREA AND IN A FEW MOMENTS IT WILL CEASE TO ITCH AND IS COMPLETELY GONE THE NEXT DAY!!!

Hmmm I went on Snopes and it is listed as "undetermined". They said the Canadian thing is not true but that people have been using this method and some swear by it. I do love Vicks for a cold.. SO I may try it.

I don't know if its true or not but recently, the woman behind the counter in my local pharmacy, told me this. Haven't tried it yet, but I will try it if the need arises. What can you lose??

My coworker told me about this and she swears it works really well. Another coworker made her DH try it when he was sick and she was shocked that it worked.

Re: Vicks vapor rub.... Very interesting therory
My mother always used Vicks on me when I was little. I just heard about this recently, but, for the life of me I can't remember where.

Re: Vicks vapor rub.... Very interesting therory
vicks totally works.... it just smells funny
ok, I'm going to unfortunately expose myself as a turbo-nerd..... but I always presumed that what ever active component there is in that mystery vapo-rub was activating TRPM8 receptors in the sinuses (the same receptors that sense cold, and are stimulated by menthol).
I don't know if Vics has ever been the subject of a medical research manuscript, but when I use it, I totally think 'mmmmm, menthol'.... so that is my very unscientific conclusion......

Nope...doesn't work.
My son has a horrible cough. Has had it for 3 days.
I've been SLATHERING his poor feet with Vicks (and making him wear socks) to bed every night...and still...cough city.
I WISH this was true.

Re: Vicks vapor rub.... Very interesting therory
well, at least for me, it works to open the sinuses a bit... so I can blow my nose... I agree, it's never done anything for my cough...

Re: Vicks vapor rub.... Very interesting therory
What I'm guess happens, is that after someone has a cold, they find out to put it on their feet. The cold passes naturally on it's own, but since it was right after Vicks on the feet, that MUST be the reason....
Could also be placebo effect.
There could be some real benefit, since it would stay trapped under the blanket, and eventually work it's way up to your sinuses.
