Victims of Sandy: Do you expect to get relief funds??

If your home was flooded and it has to be renovated do you get $ from the relief funds (like from the concerts, large fundraisers, etc.)?

If not, where/to whom does this money go to?

My friend is having a very hard time. FEMA gave her barely $400, she is waiting for a visit from her Flood insurance. If they don't pull through for her, she will have to use her retirement/savings/college funds for her kids.

She is wondering where all the relief money goes, and she is saying it sounds like she makes too much money, the relief is distributed based on need (income). But is it fair for her to have to use her retirement/college savings because she was responsible for the last 20 yrs to save like this?

each of these fundraisers go to specific funds. like the steve buscemi link i just posted goes to helping families of firefighters. the concert 2 weeks ago was for red cross. it's a matter of linking up to a funding source that matches your need.

Victims of Sandy: Do you expect to get relief funds??

Im also wondering where it goes. I live in Broad Channel and a Buddhist Charity Organization came to the neighborhood on Sunday and gave every family that showed up $600 to help get stuff they need. Tzu Chi USA... I will never ever ever ever donate to anyone but them for relief funds for the rest of my life...

Anyone who owns the house has to go through insurance first, then they should go through FEMA...

I only rent and because i dont have renters insurance I am entitled to Miscellaneous Items coverage... our inspection with FEMA is this afternoon. I'm told it will be about 2 weeks before we know what, if anything we are getting for the items we lost.

whatever her flood insurance doesnt cover, she can appeal it with FEMA and get more from them. . . so tell her not to panic just yet!

Victims of Sandy: Do you expect to get relief funds??

As a victim of 9/11 (with injury) i can say I never saw a single penny from ANY relief fund ... ever.

It has tainted how I see these 'relief funds'

Sure others saw money but it was almost always to whoever got the most TV time as if to prove that the money did do well.

Sorry.. its a sore topic for me.

That is amazing to know about Tzu Chi USA. I turn 30 in a few weeks and my friends/family have been asking me what I want and I told them to make donations but I didn't know where to tell them to send them, now I know!

This is exactly what I'm afraid of. This is why I haven't donated any money. I feel like its just a scam. Red cross is #1. I'd rather see people donate time or tangeable items that people need- like contractor bags, masks, tools, paper towels, etc.

I really hope this is not the case. This should not be evaluated based on income level. It should either be a standard amount or nothing at all.

And why I NEVER give one dollar to ANY relief fund.

I do other things.

In the instance of Sandy I am waiting to see if there is someone I know, or a friend of a friend who needs help. This way I can give directly to them or help them directly.

I never give to "relief" funds.

Releif funds?? Who REALLY gets the money?

I like the red cross. I do. But ALL the money they are getting? Let them tell us, TODAY, how they are helping those who need IMMEDIATLY.

Wont happen....

I have donated directly to friends (friend of friends) and family who have been affected.

I also donate to food drives in the community or Island Harvest by purchasing items at Costco.

If you know someone, send them a gift card to home depot, bed bath beyond, restaurant...ect. I think that goes the longest way when you want to help someone as an individial IMO(other than $ itself).

This is the only other thing i would recommend. Ive gotten almost $1000 worth of GC's and cash from friends and family over the last 2 weeks. I was already able to get Shaun clothes and both of us shoes that we lost.

ON TOP of the donations of clothes that i already got for Shaun from other friends and family.

My brother in law flew here from Vegas with 3 suitcases worth of stuff.

My nephew in Las Vegas got 150 boxes of cereal from the grocery store out there and someone my sister knows is mailing it all here. (its funny because its all Halloween cereal, frankenberry and count chocula lol)

Re: Victims of Sandy: Do you expect to get relief funds??

I decided not to give to the big organziations- other then some $10 texts to the red cross

I gave my broker money and she went to long beach - served food and brought supplies

then I know someone personally impacted- and I bought her stuff

I want to know real people are actually getting real help

Our office is starting a fund for a few employees directly affected and dh has been helping/donating clothes to people he knows/works with.

On a normal basis, other than the work donation to the united way that's encouraged, we give to smaller charities where we can better see our dollars at work - not payoff large amounts of overhead.

My company has this too. Accounts set up in our credit union. One is to the general Sandy relief fund which I believe goes to the Red Cross. The other account is only for employees of our company that were impacted & will in the end be split & distrubuted directly to them. There is also a supplies collection that again was shared directly with our own employees. I chose that option for donation because I know it's going straight to someone in my office.

My employer raised over 2 mil for Sandy victims. However, the funds are ONLY going to the most in need (lower income, no savings). Other employees only qualify for loans. Loans are not the same thing as distributing the money to ALL of those that were affected.
