Video Moniters, WARNING!
Artical Link
More and more moms are using inexpensive wireless cameras to keep an eye on their babies from anywhere in the house.
But what many parents who buy these wireless monitors don't know is that they may not be the only ones watching their children.
It's a shocking invasion of privacy. Strangers peeking into your home from the street, using the very camera you thought was securing your family's safety.
Here's how it can happen.
INSIDE EDITION installed a rearview camera for the car called a backup camera. It's designed so drivers can see what's behind them when they put the car in reverse. It's a device that's growing in popularity.
But when we drove around a number of neighborhoods in New York, it didn't take long to pick up an image from a nearby home's wireless security camera. It popped up on the screen, right in our car...the back stairs to someone's home.
Front yards, backyards, and we even caught an image of a toilet, coming from a wireless camera installed in someone's bathroom. We picked up the signal just as anyone else driving by with a backup camera could as well.
Security expert Patrick Brosnan says what makes this so disconcerting is that these cameras are supposed to make families more secure.
"You're maybe sleeping better, but you're much more at risk. Those images are being sent out to individuals who could do you harm. And they're crystal clear," says Brosnan. Sandy is a mom of four from Belle Harbor, New York. We showed her video of her 2-year-old son that popped up in our car.
"It's very upsetting because I'm in there all the time with my girls. I change clothes in there, I used to nurse my baby in this room," Sandy says.
And when INSIDE EDITION drove past a young woman's house in Howard Beach, New York, we saw video of her son, Vincent, climbing in his crib.
"Let me show you what we saw from down the street," said Matt Meagher.
"I'm shocked. I'm terrified. I'm very upset. I spent $300 for the whole world to see what's going on in my house...I never knew this was happening. Never. This is horrible," said the mom.
The juvenile products industry says the overwhelming safety benefits of video monitors far outweigh any risks, and that newer technology is emerging that will prevent interception
In the meantime, if you want to make sure you aren’t inadvertently sending images and sound from inside your home for anyone to see, experts say you can either install wired cameras, or buy a wireless camera that is WI-FI Certified. WI-FI cameras use your wireless internet connection, but remember: the encryption MUST be turned on!
I dont have one of these but this I thought was worth sharing.........

Can you just use an audio option instead of the Audio and Visual?

Re: Video Moniters, WARNING!
I think this is pretty common- my friends live across the street from a couple with the same monitor and you can change the channel on theirs and see the neighbors kid in bed. It is weird, but I don;t know what you can do about it.....

Re: Video Moniters, WARNING!
I have the Summer Infant handheld and when I turn to channel B I see the neighbors kid. Like a PP said, creepy but not much you can do. We are just going to be careful with it.

Re: Video Moniters, WARNING!
Oh I don't like the sound of that at all. And I was just debating between getting a video monitor or an audio one.
We live in a condo too so I don't even know half the people in my building.
Creepy...

Nothing new here, I've heard stories of this. With the audio ones, others can pick up your conversations too. There's really no win win situation-you just have to decide what you are comfortable with.
For me, I definitely wanted a monitor so I could see/hear DD and this won't change my mind this go around. It's kind of creepy but not much I can do about it.

Re: Video Moniters, WARNING!
It really has to do with the type of monitor you get (digital vs. analog) The below is from Baby Monitor.com
Analog audio baby monitors operate on radio frequency that transmits a FM signal while the monitor is on. Most use a fixed frequency of 49MHz, 900MHz, or 2.4GHz. Your receiver will pick up this signal, but so will other receivers that are operating on the same bandwidth.
It is possible that your neighbor's baby monitor receiver will pick up your monitor's signal. It is possible to hear CB radio calls, cordless phone, and cell phone conversations through your receiver. If you can hear others, they may hear you. To minimize the problem, turn off the monitor when you are not monitoring baby. If your house has aluminum siding your signal is somewhat less apt to be picked up by other receivers.
Digital audio baby monitor signals provide more privacy. Digital monitors scramble the signal before transmitting to the receiver where the signal is then unscrambled. It is more difficult for another receiver to pick up a scrambled signal. Digital monitors have a larger reception range than analog, some advertising up to 2000 feet. Another plus is that digital models have less static and less interference from your other household electronics. Before purchasing a digital monitor, make sure it has digital technology and not just digital sound.
Whether the monitor has wireless capability or not has no bearing on the privacy of the transmission. In baby monitors, wireless equates to battery operation, not the use of a router like a wireless internet connection.

Re: Video Moniters, WARNING!
This kind of thing is exactly why I don't have a video monitor...I don't want someone else seeing my baby. We do have the Angelcare monitor (audio only), but when she's not napping or sleeping, I shut it off.

Re: Video Moniters, WARNING!
Having other people her us/the baby doesn't freak me out as much as other people actually seeing our baby. I feel like audio only is a little more anonymous than a complete stranger having a visual sneak-peak to our house and child.

I agree. If you want video, pay a little more and go digital, but you really need to understand the technology and learn how to encrypt the signal.
I used to be able to pick up my skeevy neighbor's phone conversations on their cheap cordless, from a pair of wireless headphones I used for gaming. Now that's creepy!!!

ttc crasher but I've seen this with my own two eyes. My SIL could pick up her neighbors baby from across the street. Really freaked her out, got rid of her video monitor and she told her neighbor.
