VIOLENT Protests spreading to suburbs
There was looting in Whitestone on Monday night- the Keyfood and Walgreens were both looted overnight.
***I AM APOLOGIZING. I HAD INCORRECT INFORMATION. THESE STORES WERE NOT LOOTED.
I'm so sorry that I posted before I verified my information. my Brother heard from his co-workers they had been looted, but when he showed up to work, he found out it was a rumor. I apologize for spreading false information.

Is that the shopping complex that has the NYSC?

I live in the neighborhood and I haven’t heard that. In fact the shopping center looks fine. Why would they loot a key food when there’s a liquor store a few feet away and it was untouched?

VIOLENT Protests spreading to suburbs
My in laws live in Whitestone, they said they didn't hear of any looting at Key Food last night. Not that they would know for sure, but my MIL is world's biggest gossip and is always talking with the neighbors, lol.

I have seen so many posts on Facebook warning of violence, but none of them have turned out to be true. People are posting all day about things they heard from a friend of a friend who knows a police officer. None of these are true.
The vast majority of protests have been peaceful and very moving to watch.
While I want to believe that those rumor posts are originating from a place of genuine worry and concern and maybe even ignorance, in my heart I feel (know) they are coming from a place of hate that is designed to turn it into an “us vs them” situation and create a further divide.
What a sad world this is.
I was questioning it the other day, but I know the bricks thing is 100% true now. I still don't understand who would waste the money on dropping off random piles of bricks, especially near the over passes of the highways, but apparently it's happening. I understand someone ordered and paid for them, but whatever company is dropping them off should be brought up on charges. They must know it's not for building.
How do you know it’s true? Asking cause I have. I have not seen any reports on this from any new station or police update.

Someone tried to post about this on my neighborhood watch page on FB and the post got flagged by the admin so I am guessing it could not be proven as true. The admin directly communicates with the PD so I am assuming they had no reports of it

Thanks. I keep seeing this on fb how someone talked to a cop and said it or screenshot of someone saying it but no actual real information from source. I feel like if this is true wouldn’t the news by now be reporting it.
On one page a local congressman from Nassau County asked people to stop reposting information because most of it is not true. A lot of things going were purposely made up to get everyone all riled up. Drives me crazy when people repost without verifying things first!!

Someone I know in govt who is in frequent communicating with the police also said not only is this not true, but all the rumors and panic is causing a huge waste of resources for the police.

I really feel like social media is just the down fall of our society. It's such an easy way to spread false information like wild fire.

Re: VIOLENT Protests spreading to suburbs
We all have the obligation and ability to fact check before spreading rumors. Not just here, but on facebook, twitter, etc. If you see something that you know is not factual, call it out.
Everything about the protests has become a game of telephone. Buzzfeed of all places actually has a couple of decent articles that are debunking rumors that are spreading over social media as though they are facts. If you read something that seems like it's too insane to be true, try googling it and seeing if an actual legitimate news site has reported on it.
Buzzfeed - Running List of Hoaxes
Buzzfeed - Investigating Bricks
People (not people here on this site necessarily) are trying to divide us. But as Lincoln famously said "A house divided against itself cannot stand."

My brother works in the walgreens and it was looted. He told me that the keyfood was also done. Maybe that info was inaccurate, but he said that he saw it.

It really is. I really am hating society!! People just constantly repeat rumors without even knowing it’s true. It also show how stupid and ignorant people are. People are already on the SCPD post accusing them of lying. So apparently then saying it isn’t good enough. They just clearly want to make situations out of nothing!!

The bad thing is, it makes me think less of people who just repost fake information without looking into it. Not just about the protests, but about everything. Silly things about Covid, political things, things about this or that being a sign of sex trafficking, all those urban legend type things. I have someone on my facebook who people constantly call out- saying- umm that article is from 2016 and that child has been found. Um, that was proven false here is the Snopes link about it. But she continues to just blindly post it. It turns me off. Then someone was ranting about the protesters the FIRST day the protests started and said- the Covid numbers are already going up due to them gathering in these large groups. Um, they just started that day. Even if they spread it like wild fire, the numbers wouldn't go up the same day. It takes time to see a spike related to a gathering. Common sense.

The officer I spoke to said it happened at an overpass in Nassau. I trust his word. I know him personally. Not from a friend of a friend. Not sure why he'd make it up. He was warning us to say away from a specific area.
Can you ask him which overpass? I really would like to see if I can find something on it!

just so you know i am not trying to be snarky or not believe you because if it is true i rather know that but i just want to be able to verify it.
I would just think if bricks are really being thrown at people why it hasn't been reported especially with things are going right now I would think min. the media would just up on the story!
