My niece is 23 months and says few words but knows how to communicate what she wants and tried to explain what she is doing. My sister had her tested by a therapist and the therapist said that since she can communicate and understands when you talk to her that she is just being lazy but will talk when she wants to.

My babies are just about 15 months and say very little - DD will say da da da da - to everything. DS says dadadada also - sometimes they throw in a ma ma - but they still aren't saying it to us - DD does know how to get what she wants by pointing and trying to say things. Nothing is clear yet though.

I'm sure you know as a parent it's frustrating sometimes when your child is not reaching certain milstones that is considered average. It's really easy to get defensive about topics like this bc there's nothing we (a parent) can do about it. I can try to will DS to talk all I want but he'll do it when he's ready. Just be there for your family member whenever they are ready to talk about it.
Nate is 19 months now and not saying a boatload of words. We had him tested in late Oct and the speech therapist wasn't too concerned bc his cognitive and comprehension skills were very good. DH took him today to get his hearing tested bc they wanted to rule out a hearing problem since he failed the 1st hearing test when he was born. The therapist wants to see him next month again for another evaluation.
I have actually noticed a big difference since Oct. Before he would mumble alot of things, but his words are a lot clearer now. I'm honestly not too concerned bc he understands most commands. Instead of staying Yes or No, he'll shake his head (most of the time no of course).
