**** DOOM AND GLOOM AHEAD ****
What if, they don't develop a vaccine? Different strains of the coronavirus (like the ones that cause the common cold) have been around since the beginning of time, but scientists have never developed a vaccine (or a cure), AND immunity to the common cold is relatively short.
Here we sit, 17 years after the SARS outbreak, and more than 5 years after the MERS outbreak, and scientists have been unable to come up with a vaccine for either of those two types of coronaviruses.
We have no idea if the antibodies that are generated after an active infection will even support immunity beyond a few months.
Where are we going to be without a vaccine???

This could happen. Mother Nature and science work in weird ways. I know they never developed a vaccine for sars but you rarely hear about it anymore. It could phase itself out or it could mutate and become worse. Who really knows. It could be natural selection.

it's one of the things i've thought about. it makes me cry because i don't know how else to react.
i'm 46 (47 next month), i'm relatively healthy... but this is the first time in a long time that i am legitimately fearing death.

I haven't considered the thought of no vaccine at all, but I do think to some degree that this is fundamentally changing our world. I do no know who will surivie mortally speaking but it is now creeping on me. I don't think we are prepared for these conversations but I do know that we are seeing the cracks int he foundations.

I fear that too. We can't live in this state for the rest of time. That would literally be the end of the world. So, I do believe it would come down to taking your chances and hoping you are one of the overwhelming majority that survives.
I do not believe it will come to that though- there will be some type of vaccine or treatment.

Vaccines and especially treatments are inundating the research realm right now. I'm actually not sure anything non-covid related is even happening, at least I haven't seen much.
I would be very, very surprised if no vaccine and/or treatment proves effective and is approved by the FDA.
I would not compare what is happening now to SARS or MERS.

Also, I read that SARS fizzled itself out before they could begin a vaccine trial. The outbreak only lasted 7 months.

They are working on many different vaccines at the same time, so there is a chance that 1 will work. Also, they are looking into treatments, so if they can't prevent it, they can treat it before it gets bad ( like tamilflu.)
There are other antiviral drugs out there- there are maintenance drugs for HIV that make the virus undetectable & I know it s a different type of virus, but people never thought that would happen.
There is not vaccine for that, so they fought it two ways- learn how it spreads & act to prevent it, and learn how to treat it.
There has been research on corona viruses that lost funding because there wasn't a n active need., so although no this one is new, they have a starting point.
So, i don't think it will be never- it is just matter of how long it will take & how effective it will be, but i believe if they can
t' eliminate it, they will at least be albe to make it less dangerous.

I haven't thought about that. I'm pretty confident that a vaccine will be developed. I saw on the news tonight that Emory University is already starting small scale human trials of a vaccine. That made me feel hopeful

I get what you were saying. That worrying about a vaccine is pointless, because it is something we have ZERO control over, just like most things that can kill us. You weren't saying you didn't want to social distance for this because there is a greater chance you would be killed in a car crash.

I remember once my uncle died from the flu..., but wait he had AIDs so technically he died from Flu in 2010 complicated by AIDS that he had since the late 70s but no one gave shit about it since it was just the “flu” and we just buried him and accepted his death. But it’s ok because they have medicine so you can deal with HIV and it’s gets “surpressed”. Do you see the pattern??
ETA: just in case you don’t: No One Wants Fukn AIDS or HIV or COVID. But I would take my chances with COVID/getting hit by a car over HIV.I saw a post about HIV meds like they were the miracle drug and they aren’t.

What was suggested by the OP is sort of what I’ve been guessing might happen. I was thinking virus will mutate to new strains and the vaccine’s effectiveness will be limited like the flu vaccine is (my kids all got the flu this winter even though they all had the shot). What if the new strains are more deadly than this one? I really hope this won’t happen & it’ll really just fizzle out. But who knows.

I just read a new article that stated the virus actually mutates a lot slower than originally thought. It mutates slower than the flu. That would mean if/when they are able to create a vaccine for it, it will be very effective.
