WARNING Kids movie about killing God.
The Golden Compass. A New movie due out dec. 7th .Is said to be a watered down version of of the first book in a trilogy by author Philip Pullman. Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview My books are about killing God" In the final book a boy and girl kill God so they can do as they please.Real nice.
:- I just found out about this and wanted to pass it along I know sometimes kids go in groups to the movies ,and we may not all really know what it is that they are seeing. .Have a great happy and healthy holiday everyone

Re: WARNING Kids movie about killing God.
That is CRAZY!!! I can't believe they would market a movie towards kids when it's about killing God!! What kind of message is that going to send to children??

Re: WARNING Kids movie about killing God.
you're right....DH said something along those lines (my DH is quite the faithful man) and was very upset knowing that the creator was an atheist and publicly stated that organized religion is BS and that this movie is to set kids straight about the non-existence of G-d

Re: WARNING Kids movie about killing God.
The movie is very pro-atheism. Everyone has a right to practice whatever they feel but parent's should know this so they make an informed decision.

I don't mean to start a debate or a fight here, but I don't think a movie would "set kids straight about the non-existence of god". It's a movie, if you don't want your kid to see it, don't let them.
There are plenty of movies that support religion (Passion of the Christ for example) so why is it so strange or bad that someone who is an atheist would make a movie?

Re: WARNING Kids movie about killing God.
I think the debate is about the subject matter of the movie being a bit "misleading".
While everybody is not a Christian, as a parent, I am actually happy to find out what this movie is really about.

I don't think it is strange, but since you asked if it is bad IMO it is because there is a God, one to revere and love and honor.

Which is fine but you should "disclose" the true intent of the movie before "luring" kids of family who believes.

Sophie, I agree, but I also think parents should look into what their kids are watching even if it isn't what it appears to be at first glance.

Very true! I had no idea personally. I am glad it was disclosed. Then people have an informed choice and can go see the movie if they want to do so

Then take your child to see it .I dont care this is America do what you want. However i am sure alot of people do not want to expose their kids to that. I happen to be one of those parents. So i am happy to be informed.

I'm with Kate on this one. No movie, book, song, etc. led me to the decision I have made about God or organized religion. These were beliefs that I came up with on my own as an adult. A parent i work with actually went out and bought the trilogy because her MIL was so worked up about this movie. She said the books aren't as bad as what people make them out to be. Yes he's an atheist but in her opinion something is wrong if you take the books seriously. They are clearly fantasy fiction books. Again I haven't read them that's what I heard. I should hope parents would censor what their kids watch for reason more than the religious aspect of the movie.

Re: WARNING Kids movie about killing God.
Heres the thing...
Religion is personal and touchy, and you are going to get both sides of the argument here... this is a hard one to agree on.
I probably wouldn't even take my 10 yr old stepdaughter to see this because it looks like it might be a bit scary. I would take my 16 yr old there because it would start a nice conversation and debate.
I am not scared of my beliefs being challenged. I think anything produced by an atheist or agnostic - or any different belief - scares people who believe, and thats why they get angry. If you are firm in your beliefs, truly believe them, then people could say that an elephant is their God, and they would not even argue with it. I went to Thailand, and there were images of Buddha EVERYWHERE. They don't believe in the Judeo-Christian God. Why would anyone tell them that they are worshipping the wrong God? They aren't...
No one is right or wrong - its what he or she believes in. As long as they aren't spewing hatred to a specific group of people (which they still are legally allowed to do) then I'm ok with it. Thats the wonderful thing about freedom....

Re: WARNING Kids movie about killing God.
I think everyone is overreacting. Agree with whoever said there are plenty of movies like Passion of the Christ. You are free to believe whatever you'd like in this country. If you are so strong in your belief, then a movie is not goign to change your mind. And I hardly think a kid is goign to walk out of there saying" Wow, so I should kill God ?" Its a story.
BTW, I hate those sci fi movies anyway. blech.

Re: WARNING Kids movie about killing God.
Well my very orthodox friend suggested we go see the Chronicals of Narnia. He had NO IDEA it was about Christianity. I don't know what kind of full disclosure people expected about that- the ads didn't say anything about it being a Christian themed movie.
I did know it was a Christian themed movie, because I remember the books from growing up. Even though I was a Jewish child, I read them and didn't understand the lion was a symbol for Jesus. until I was much older. I was able to enjoy it and that was that. And those books certainly didn't affect my faith.
Even though I haven't seen the movie, I'm sure that it is a very veiled atheistic view. I don't think kids really think about these things or realize what it is about. But if parents make a big deal about it, the kids will be curious and then they will learn.

ITA-
As a Christian I saw all the connections to religion in "The Chronicles of Narnia" however if those were not my beliefs- I don't think I would of made that connection.
ETA- It will not be a movie Ill be seeing and since DS is only 2- he obviously wont be seeing it either...
I think its important for parents to be informed what there children are watching AT ALL times...
When DS is older- I don't intend to allow him to watch profanity and "evil" things- but I'm sure he'll go behind my back and see his share of things I don't agree with. HOWEVER- I believe if he is raised to know right from wrong- if he is raised in a Christian home, he will be able to separate fact from fiction....(this is of course our families beliefs- not to say this is the way everyone family should work)

Re: WARNING Kids movie about killing God.
I also believe that if Chronciles of Narnia were released with no warning that it contained Christian symbols and subtext, why is it a big deal if a movie is released that contains athiestic symbols?
Watch the movie with your kids, use it as an opportunity to discuss different beliefs. Honestly, if you think that letting your kids watch one movie that doesn't support a Christian view of the world is going to ruin them (or their belief in god) that's kind of sad. I would think that the values you bring them up with would have a stronger impression on them than one movie.
To each his own, but it doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me and I seriously doubt it is as simple as "children killing god."
Sorry, but this just sounds like one of those over-zealous simplifications that gets tossed around to get everybody's panties in a wad.
ETA: This is the description from the site Barbara posted: "Humanity is controlled by a governing body of men who have determined that free will, free thought and the influence of knowledge-carrying particles from parallel universes are the enemies of a unified, obedient society. "
Hmm, seems a bit deeper than some wacko children deciding to kill the benevolent creator. Considering what a mess our world is because of some religious extremists, it might actually be a good message to teach children to think for themselves and not swallow dogma that's dished by people in robes.
