Re: WARNING-N. Merrick Residents-pitbull seen in area
It was on the news this morning. Two pitbulls attacked a woman yesterday and another man the day before while he was riding his bike. The police came while the dogs were attacking the woman and when the dogs realized there was someone else there they went after the cops. One of the dogs was shot and killed the other took off and they have been trying to find him.
ETA- this happened in Merrick

Thanks to the OP for posting this!
The woman who was attacked is a very good friend of MIL. She is devastated. I heard on news12 that she is now in an induced coma
The second dog MAY be injured, Police ask that if you see anything to report it to 911 immediately.
Please be careful out there today.

Re: WARNING-N. Merrick Residents-pitbull seen in area
My uncle is a paramedic for Nassau County and unfortunately got the call and saw the lady in the ER. She was not in good shape. He said she'd probably loose her arm or part of it. As of last night they had only caught one of the two dogs. that they find the other soon.

Re: WARNING-N. Merrick Residents-pitbull seen in area
I keep thinking about this story and wonder how something like this happens, especially in an area so populated.
Is this because some horrible person abused/trained these dogs to be so vicious?
I mean, you hear of people being bit by dogs on occasion, but this.........it's just so awful.
I have no words.

Re: WARNING-N. Merrick Residents-pitbull seen in area
i have a bad feeling that the woman did something to provoke the dogs. they said she was frightened by dogs so maybe her body language alone gave those dogs more fuel on top of them probably having terrible owners (why were they loose??) it's a recipe for disaster. it's unfortunate because it gives other pitbulls a terrible rap.

The 62 year old woman was walking the track. I can't imagine what she did to provoke them besides run for her life. Poor woman.

Dogs aren't "provoked" in the same way people are.....I was bit badly by a dog when I was younger because I immediately tried to run away. That was probably enough to provoke those dogs....especially since they also attacked someone riding a bike (which also seems like running away).

I don't think provoke is the right word...but running from a dog is never a good idea.
FWIW, we have a pitbull who hates bicycles. When he sees a person on a bicycle he will try to attack the bike (not the person). He does the same thing with basketballs, too.
We also have a golden retriever and two bichons and all four dogs get along very well. Unfortunately this sounds like owner negligence or some kind of illness.

Re: WARNING-N. Merrick Residents-pitbull seen in area
She is 62 so I don't think she was running. The dogs were probably someones pets who were let go because they became dangerous. She was walking on a track near a senior complex when she was mauled. I would have freaked out too. She had no where to go and they shouldn't have been roaming the streets. It could have been any breed of dog that attacked. A lot of pit bulls are known to be mean. It is all how they are cared for at home...Raise them right, they can be ok..

Actually pitbulls are very loyal loving dogs. They are not in the least bit "mean". I seriously doubt they became dangerous on their own. I can bet they were abused or trained to fight. It saddens me when I hear stories like this. The breed is so loving and loyal. Unfortunately there are aholes out there that abuse them and train them to attack. There is nothing this poor woman could have done to change the outcome. She most certainly did not provoke the attack. I hope the owners of these dogs are prosecuted.

ITA, have had them all my life. have one now and wouldnt think of getting any other kind of dog. i wish we could "put down" the bad people not the "bad" dogs. they are only making their owners happy when they do what they are trained to do. its really sad. I hope that lady is ok and that guy also.
