Wash your masks daily or throw away disposables
A friend got diagnosed with Legionnaires disease From reusing a mask. Convinced she has covid but tests were all negative. Thankfully they thought to test her for legionnaires. I am so guilty of hanging my disposable mask on my car and reusing it for errands. Never again.
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up as many kids head back to school and teachers back to work.

Supposedly you can't get it from the mask. Perhaps she got it from some other place. (I googled Legionnaires from wearing a mask and numerous results came up saying you can't) It still is a good reminder about the hygiene of facemasks. When I wear mine to a store, I have it on maybe 30 min so I do reuse it multiple times. https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-legionnaires/fact-check-you-cant-catch-legionnaires-disease-by-wearing-a-face-mask-idUSKCN25128Y

I’m just going by what she told me. Maybe she didn’t get it from the mask but the mask made it worse? They did say hanging your dirty mask on your mirror is one of the worst things because it just bakes in the sun. Another thing I do and no longer will do. Also, Just throwing them in your pocket or pocketbooks is terrible.
Even if it doesn’t directly cause it, I just want to remind people not to slack on reusing and cleaning masks like I have been!

Yikes I throw mine in my purse. But what are you supposed to do if say you go to a store, take it off when you get in your car, then later go into another store? Where are you supposed to be storing your mask between uses in the same trip?

Re: Wash your masks daily or throw away disposables
I have about 15 masks I’ve collected over the months. I wear a clean one every day and wash at the end of the day is boiling hot water w soap.
I do have a few throw aways I keep in the car but to wear once or twice (if I’m stopping for gas on the way to somewhere I won’t be wearing my usual mask)
My niece started making Mask Buddy’s for them. Lanyards with beads and your name or anything else you want on them. Thy clip to the loops of you mask so when you are not wearing it, it hangs from your neck so you’re not taking it off and putting in your pocket or bag or anywhere else. It’s Always with you until you are in the house for the night and it gets washed. Genius little idea from a 6 year old! They’ve been making them for a couple months and donating $ to various children’s charities (so far $500 to st Jude & $500 to Ronald McDonald House - they almost have another $500 to go to another charity now)
If anyone is interested, for you or your kids, the Facebook page is MaskBuddyUSA or you can email them at [email protected]

Re: Wash your masks daily or throw away disposables
But I thought Legionaires came from contaminated mist from HVAC type systems? So.how does tossing a mask in your purse cause that? I can see other dirt and germs getting on it that way of course. But Legionaires?

I bought alligator clip chains and hook it on the mask and wear it around my neck. Especially for the kids.

Wash your masks daily or throw away disposables
Masks were never mean to be reused for all eternity, it makes me crazy when I see them hanging from the rearview mirror in a car. I ususally use fabric masks, so after one use they go in wash. If Im using a disposable, in the garbage, hence disposable. I am so amazed that common sense just doesn't exist!

this is the problem, the civilian population isn't trained to use PPE. You are supposed to wash your hands before putting on, not touch your mask while it is on and throw out after use.

You don’t get legionnaires disease from wearing a mask. It’s from water. Your friend most likely read that on FB and repeated it to you. It is false.
I wear my mask once and wash it. The only exception is when I wear it to the pool. You literally need to wear it to enter the gate and then you can take it off unless you need to run into the bathroom quick.

I've seen "experts" on FB saying NOT to use a ziploc. I believe they said a paper bag is better.

My friend actually had legionnaires. They are seeing an uptick in it. Masks might not CAUSE it but they can contribute to it. This is coming from what her doctor who actually treated her in a hospital said to her.

Wasn’t saying putting it in your purse causes legionnaires. I was simply stating that her doctor who treated her said that throwing them in pockets or pocketbooks is a another issue that is just unsanitary.

I throw mine into the bottom of my purse that I haven't cleaned out in 4 months, I sometimes reuse disposable masks, and I do not wash my cloth masks nearly as frequently as I should. If all of that hasn't made me sick by now, covid doesn't stand a chance.

Wash your masks daily or throw away disposables
Bacteria is everywhere and can transfer from one place to another so I wouldn’t be surprised if ur friend’s mask caused her to have legionnaires. Think of the many times we touch those masks, think of all the kinds of surfaces, of all the places we leave those masks. Why would it be hard to think the legionella bacteria would end up on a mask?? Add to that the warm moist of our breath...that’s a recipe for disaster.

same, except my husband is better than me because he leaves the house for work. I just dumped a bunch of them in the wash and the setting was on cold. I don't usually have a purse so it goes in my pocket.
I use the T-shirt material masks and my DH says they look like rolled up socks around the house. I know this is horrible but the other day I caught myself cleaning my sunglasses with it. Im the worse.

Bring a ziplock bag and put it in there in between uses.
I've seen "experts" on FB saying NOT to use a ziploc. I believe they said a paper bag is better.
I also read that keeping it in a ziplock is not good b/c it breeds bacteria when it gets hot in the baggie.
At this rate, I'll just keep tossing it in my purse. I don't have a hermetically sealed bag to keep it in! I swear ,we should all be dead by now at this rate!
I throw mine into the bottom of my purse that I haven't cleaned out in 4 months, I sometimes reuse disposable masks, and I do not wash my cloth masks nearly as frequently as I should. If all of that hasn't made me sick by now, covid doesn't stand a chance.
Are we long lost sisters? Because pretty much the same here, word for word. And forget my DH. He was wearing the same mask for a month and i was like, um, do you want me to wash that, I'm washing mine...
seriously i reuse the same one tons of times. mostly becuase i froget to change them out.
I did however get a holder for them! it helps me keep track of it and it helps when i go into places where i dont take my big purse with me and only my small clutch one, like rsturants it cliips on it and when i take it off it goes in there.
All it is a ear bud holders; i am having my DC use them for school also since they dont have to wear them the whole time

same, except my husband is better than me because he leaves the house for work.
OMG girl, you think that is bad, the other day I was driving home and noticed some smudge on the interior of my car and I'm anal about my car, and the rag I keep in my console for that purpose was not there because i had thrown it in the laundry. So guess what I used to buff the mark out of the dash?? Yep! In my defense I tried to use the outside part, not the inside part that goes against my nose and mouth! And I was planning to wash it when I got home, but then realized I needed to stop somewhere so I did wear it again before that.
I always use cold to wash them because i don't want them shrinking, they are tight enough. I believe the detergent and water of any kind is enough to kill anything. I don't think this virus is that resistant to soap and water of any temp to be honest.

I’m dying with ur responses!!! . I’m not a clean freak either, I don’t clean my house with regular cleaning products, I don’t even own antibacterials. I understand the importance of being exposed to bacteria (we’re all part of the same balanced ecosystem therefore each of our existences are important), I just don’t like having dirty masks attached literally to my mouth and nose plus they give me headaches and anxiety. My personal solution...I rarely wear masks lol!

Thank you. Didn’t think I had to explain it in detail, I thought saying my friend who was hospitalized and her doctor told her the mask was part of the problem would be enough to just gives a heads up to people.
