Watching these house hunters show on HGTV is...

very depressing! Especially if you live on LI you really see how far money will go in other places...I guess it's all relative to income also but still some of these houses are insane for 299,000 and underChat Icon

Re: Watching these house hunters show on HGTV is...

Just remember where the houses are located. Some of them in the middle of nowhere.

You are on LI, next to the City. It's very expensive next to big cities (Chicago, Seattle, etc..). Only the South is more affordable but again... location, location, location. We cannot compare LI to the middle of OK or TN. Location, location, location...

I know it's very tempting.

You should have seen DH when I showed him prices of houses near Charlotte, NC.

I am addicted to that show - I never feel that way because I know that they aren't located in major metro areas sometimes.

If you see the ones they do abroad, or in Chicago -- you don't feel as bad.

You have to remember that in RE - location is a huge indicator of price. Although I could live in South Jersey for a lot less than I have now - I wouldn't be happy.

I love that show but just 2 weeks ago I swear in the middle of the show we looked online to see where the town was located. It was 4 bedrooms, 3 bath in Michigan for $180K. That night we were realllllllly tempted to move lol.

That show annoys me. People complain and moan about the littlest picky things! I keep thinking if you looked in this area, you wouldn't complain that the double vanity sinks are a little too close together, or that you don't like the paint in a room.

It is depressing how much better you can do elsewhere, though we are close to the city, which is a plus.

Exactly, you are buying a house not a rug or the color of the walls. Such minor things...

I live in MI and yes the prices are good, but keep in mind things are less here then in New York, Chicago ect ect. We pain 80,000 for 1200sqf 3bedrooms 2 bath. It needed work, but you get the point. check out baycityhomes.com to see more homes in my area. It's cool just to look at what other places have to offer.

Re: Watching these house hunters show on HGTV is...

I agree, You can see our house in Cindy's album We certainly didn't buy our house for looks. It was all dependent on floor plan, property size, location, and so on... Cosmetics are minor. We decided to buy a house and finish it to our liking rather than buy something somebody else wanted because in the long run your going to change it anyway.

YES! it IS very annoying when people love a house and then are like "oh but the paint in this room is really not my thing".

How can that be SUCH a dealbreaker!?

Re: Watching these house hunters show on HGTV is...

You also have to remember that most times they are already in contract on the house they "chose" - so they are looking at the houses they didn't want or completely new ones. So...they are finding things to talk about because they aren't really interested in the house.

I can almost always predict which house they picked by how the pick it apart.
