Water Question for you Jersey Girls & NY'ers

So we're closing on 10/19 (yippy) and we started the process of all calling of the utility companies and making the switch. We finally got to the last one. The water company.. we asked her approx. how much should we expect to pay for water? The rep. gather a comp based on the usage for the existing homeowners on our block..she we should expect to pay anywhere from $80-100 per month!

I find that to be a lot. Can you ladies tell me on average what you spend on water?

Keep in mind we do laundry 1x every2 weeks and the dishwasher will only be used on holidays or huge family gatherings.

TIA!

that sounds high to me and we use a lot more water than that. we're in NJ and we just got our water/sewer bill recently. we're billed quarterly and i think it was around $160-170 for the whole quarter. The water portion was only about $40-45 for the quarter and the rest was sewer charges. Do you have sewer service in your area? That might be why the bill is so high. I think sewer charges are a set amount and aren't based on usage.

hey there! thanks for responding!
I knew that was a very high approx. DH asked the Rep the question.. so I'm sure if she miunderstood DH? I just thought that it was unsually high. Are you using NJ American Water Company? I'm not sure if the rep. calculated sewer charges.. but even w/ that.. it's still too high! I guess we'll just have to wait & see. I was hoping to get an idea as to what we'll be paying for water. I guess I'm a bit nervous wit all the bills that we now have to pay. We live in apt. and don't have to worry about water. just Light & Gas.

That sounds high for a monthly charge - maybe she meant to say per quarter.

Seems very high. Our water bills have ranged from $30 - $40 since we moved to NJ.

I live in NJ too, and our sewer is billed yearly, so it's not included with the water. I'm not sure how much per month the water bill is as we are billed quarterly. During months that are not summer months, I would say our bill is somewhere around $160 (I think.. DH handles the bills), but I know during the summer months our bill is much higher because of the IGS.

Are you buying a townhouse by any chance? When we were in our townhouse our water bill was ridiculously high due to a "facility charge". Apparently with new construction in our town they required sprinklers be installed. The vavle they had to install to handle the water pressure should the sprinklers be activated is what caused the spike in our bill even though we were not using more water.

I was thinking that your range is average. I think I will have to call back the water co. on tomorrow and get this sorted out. Cause now I'm stressing out about paying soo much for public water.
