water sono/HSG

are they the same thing or different? Dr. K is having me get a water sono done- he mentioned at my consult debating about having me do an HSG- then mentioned that it's kind of pointless since we're doing IVF- but then seemed to go back and forth saying that it's always good to know what your dealing with. The 2nd appointment he told me I'd go for a water sono... are they the same thing? I'm getting kind of nervous- AF is starting to show her ugly face (though she is warmly WELCOMED this time! Chat Icon Chat Icon ) and I'm already so crampy- I hate Provera! Chat Icon Around when in your cycle do they do the water sono? Is it while you still have AF or after she's done? Sorry- I'm so lost. TIA!Chat Icon

Re: water sono/HSG

they are pretty much the same thing. I had both. But, I only had the water sono to double check the HSG results. Watersono was much better, still not fun but much better. Maybe you can see results better on an HSG. Not sure.

I know an HSG has to be after AF and before O (roughly cd8-10). I don't remember the watersono having to be a certain day. But, maybe it was because I went in for cd3 b/w and then got the news that we were not starting that month and scheduled the watersono for the following week. So, it was probably the same time frame.

Hopefully you will only have to do one.

BA

Just wanted to add: the HSG uses an iodine solution that they shoot into you and then they use an exray machine. Watersono, uses a saline solution that they shoot into you. Can't remember what they use to see the results - I have no brains left. HSG for me was done in a hospital and watersono in the RE office.

water sono is an ultrasound where they inject dye and it's to check the contour inside the uterus, it does not check tubes which HSG would

watersonos they look inside your cavity to see if there are any polyps or fibroids. HSG is to check if your tubes are cleared. It is probably best to have a HSG b/c if your tubes reveal a hydrosalphinx (which is toxic fluid), that toxic fluid could prevent implantation, or you can suffer from a miscarriage. If you have a hydrosalphinx, some doctors want to remove it prior to IVF.

I am surprised you haven't had either test done?

Good Luck!

Yeah, me too. I think Dr. K was shocked that I didn't have either test done also. Last year the other dr. I was seeing (actually his senior partner) discovered a polyp but I was already on injectables for my 1st IUI and our insurance was running out so when my dr called and suggested we remove the polyp I told him no b/c it would mean cancelling the cycle and then I'd have no insurance.
I guess b/c Dr. K saw the notes about a polyp, he wants to start w/ a water sonogram maybe? He hasn't talked anymore about an HSG, but I guess I'll find out what's what more so when I go in later on this week for my CD3 bloodwork.... thanks everyone!!!

Re: water sono/HSG

An HSG is a radiological test in which they inject an Iodine solution into your uterus, they can then watch it on a radiology screen to make sure the uterus is shaped normally and the tubes are clear or not. You can actually see the solution flow up and out the tubes. It is generally done at a radiology office or hospital.

A water sono is performed in the office and they inject water into the uterus to make sure it is clear (no bumps or polyps). They use an internal sonogram to watch the fluid go in, open the uterus a little and flow out. They cannot see the tubes with a water sono, just the uterus.

The water sono is usually done 7 days after the start of your cycle. I would imagine if he sees anything of concern on the water sono, he will go ahead with the HSG.

Re: water sono/HSG

IMO they are drastically differnt in terms of procedures on you. The Water sono for me was no big deal. My HSG was torture and I wouldnt do it again without being under anesthesia( due to my own cervical issues though)

Ok that makes sense. Chat Icon He's curious about the polyp- which is why he's opting for just the water sono at this time I guess. I know he told me he'd be the one to do it and if he saw a polyp he'd deal with it then. He did a 3d sonogram already (the day he got the machine and was 'testing it out')- but he didn't see anything then.
Thanks everyone!

How long does a water sono take (the actual procedure?) Is it painful? I've heard such bad things about getting an HSG done- but maybe a water sono won't be so bad then? Should I take anything before hand? I know both DH and I have to take 4 pills of an antibiotic the night before it I think they said (i'll get the instructions when I go in for CD3 bloodwork). TIA again!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

for me the water sono was nothing, I think it took a few minutes and was done in the office. The weirdest part is the swoosh of water that come out at the end
And the HSG isn't bad for everyone either, I think it really depends on your issues, for me it was a bit painful but that's because I have a blocked tube, so the dr kept me moving side to side to see if the dye would move

Good luck!

The water sono was worst than the HSG for me. I had fibroids which is why it hurt.

Call about this...I think you and DH have to take the 4 zithromax on CD1 or 2 of your cycle.Chat Icon
It has nothing to do with the water sono, it has to do with IVF retrieval and transfer.
You will have to take Doxycycline for five days starting the day before the water sono.

I wondered about this. I had two water sonos. The first one we were told to both take four pills the day before and the second one only I was told to take one pill a day for four or five days starting the day before water sono. I was not doing IVF in the time around both. I don't know if it is done both ways or someone gave me wrong info. I always wondered about this. Chat Icon

Really? I had my computer in front of me and typed it all out as the nurse said it- but I'll definitely call them and double check. I have a feeling my CD1 is probably going to be today... not sure why AF is taking so long to really get here- I started seeing streaking of pink/red yesterday morning so thought for sure she'd be here today... Either way I'll give a call this morning. Thanks Gerty! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: water sono/HSG

For the water sono, you take the antibiotics a couple days before. Once you schedule the water sono, you'll know when you should start your pills.

The water sono was a piece of cake. I've done it 2x. It's more of a wierd feeling than painful. For me, the HSG was worse. I took advil before but still had painful cramps. They are both really quick tests though.

I confirmed everything w/ the nurse today. She said both DH and I will be taking the azithromycian the day before the water sonogram b/c it does 2 things- first it prevents risk of infection since they stick a catheter thru (maybe my cervix?) someplace (i forget) Chat Icon to fill it with water for the water sono and this way DH won't pass bacteria to me and my body will fight off any bacteria that might get thru there. She also said we had to take it for IVF for the same reason b/c of europlasma... some word that I can't pronounce or spell I guess. Chat Icon
Then I have to take doxyc.... (I think the stress is getting to my brain lol- b/c I can't read my own handwriting) for 5 days, I believe she said starting the day of the retrieval.

My DH took the dioxlicycline starting the day I started to stim until my retrieval. I actually took Z-PAC after my retrieval along with Medrol (which is a mild steroid). I once had to take dioxlicycline for something else, I didn't react to well with it, which is why they gave me the Z-PAC instead.

Re: water sono/HSG

They CAN check if your tubes are working by way of a watersono. It isn't as effective, but it is possible.

I am allergic to radioactive iodine and thus they did not want to do a water sono on me unless absolutely necessary. (If they do it, I need it done in the hospital, after premedicating with steriods and then they will keep me on an IV Benadryl drip. No thanks.)

At my water sono, they proved that my remaining tube was open by putting water in my uterus and watching it pool by my ovary. It had to get there somehow. The hypothesis is that if they can get water up my tube, they can get semen up my tube.

Good luck.
