Ways to relieve leg cramp/charley horse?
I've had several charley horses during pregnancy, but the worst one was this morning. My calf still hurts hours later. My calf is very tight and it's uncomfortable to walk on my right leg. Is there anything I can do to relieve it?

If you get one when you're sleeping - the fastest way to get rid of it is to jump out of bed and stand up. Putting pressure on your foot makes it go away almost instantly. I never found that massaging them helped -but standing up right away made them go away every time.

Standing up helps - but standing on something COLD ends it for me. Bathroom floor - kitchen floor - ice pack... In some weird way - the extreme cold 'shocks' the muscle...

flex your toes upward (do not point your toes, it will make it worse). Also make sure you are hydrated.

this is exactly what the nurse in my OB practice said. She said to walk barefoot on a cold floor (like tile) if possible.

I had one last week.. calf got a huge knot in it. Dh massaged it for me, but was in pain for a couple of days after. I drank some Orange juice for potassium, water to keep hydrated.. those seem to help with the rub down on legs the next couple of nights after.

Unfortunately, my mom has had these all her life - that's how i knew about the cold thing. It stops it almost immediately after your foot hits the cold.
Another thing her doc told her was to have more potassium...so if they're getting particularly bad - she'll get some bananas...

The horrible pain went away after a few minutes, but my calf is still really tight. I tried walking around after some of the pain subsided and I could barely put any weight on it. I still have some trouble walking on my right leg now. Usually the pain goes away after a few minutes and then I'm fine. I don't know why my calf still has a big knot in it.

make sure you're eating banana's! You need potassium. Otherwise you're going to keep getting them!

I was getting them very badly...I called my midwife and she said I need:
1) Potasiium
2) Calcium
3) Lots of water
I think I was lacking calcium because I started incorporatin more into my diet and they have gotten better.

Standing up immediately on the floor works for me (I never heard about the cold floor I will have to try that sometime). I found last pregnancy that if you up your calcium and have some potassium (bananas) and keep up your fluids those things also help prevent them in the first place.

Re: Ways to relieve leg cramp/charley horse?
I've been eating a banana and having milk right before bed. I noticed that when I didn't have it, the tendency to cramp happened more often. It does the trick for me.
I actually ran out today after work to get more b/c I forgot them when I went shopping yesterday.

That's the only thing that works for me, too. I find that I get them when I stretch my legs while sleeping (I think it involves pointing my toes) but if you can flex your feet back really hard BEFORE it gets to its "climax", it will go away and only be a little sore the next day.

This works for me too, I stetch through my heal and point my toes up, it makes the pain go away immediately! I got two of them last night!
