We dont know what to do with TINY
We are planning to go to MYStic on April 12 to April 14th and we have no idea who can take Tiny. I asked my friend with the Chihuahua but he cannot take him.....
Where do you bring your pet when you go on vacation?

no one in your family can watch her?
if not, there have got to be doggie day care & kennels that someone on LI can recommend.

usually the vets can board your dog for you and I know some petsmarts have hotels in them.

Re: We dont know what to do with TINY
either take him with you (see if the hotel is pet friendly) or look into putting him in a kennel or paying a pet sitter to stay in your house with him
We're driving to NY with the dogs from GA in July......put a bullet in my head now!

Re: We dont know what to do with TINY
We had an emergency, my granddad passed, so we had to leave our Piper with the vet for two nights. She was totally stressed when we picked her up. Although it was affordable, and I really doubt she was mistreated in the least, it just wasn't affectionate enough so next time she'll stay at her day care (yes, she goes there 2x a week and has a walker the other days-spoiled, SPOILED.) Its more money, but when she came home with little hematomas in her eyes from the stress I felt so bad. She loves her day care and they do cageless boarding. Worth it to me.
So I guess my advice is to look for cageless if your little on is the least bit high strung, otherwise a vet will take good care of your pup. We're in VA or else I'd recommend ours to you.

Re: We dont know what to do with TINY
Are they fixed? We are getting him neutered but not until after we come back from our trip. He was good with the chocolate lab and the cat at his last house. He is really good with children too.
What kind of dogs do you have?
Fm me if you want Scott

Re: We dont know what to do with TINY
I have the phone # for a dog sitter in Bellmore -- she will take the dog into her home.
FM me if you want the info.
Welcome to the world of dog ownership -- time to start buttering people up for future trips you may take, and maybe even find a HS student who can take your dog for a walk once in a while in case you ever need that.
PS For future reference -- I think ALL of the Kimpton Hotels are pet-friendly, and they are lovely!! They give gifts for your dog and put out the welcome mat....

I either use my vets office or Willow Kennel in Deer Park. My Lhasa Apso bites so they are pretty much the only ones who will watch him.

Re: We dont know what to do with TINY
Sometimes the vet techs do dog sitting as a side job. I would ask around.
I would try to avoid a place where they will keep him in a crate all day. Although Katie is in a crate when we are not home, it is her crate with her toys and her house. I'd be afraid that she would get upset in a crate in an unfamiliar surrounding.
I've seen this place advertised before: http://www.petandhomesitters.com/
Also, you can check the postings board at your local petco, they usually have ads for petsitters.

Re: We dont know what to do with TINY
Hi.... I have 2 options for you. both are rated really high by people who've used them. First is the Petsmart in Huntington. They have a petshotel there. It's cageless, every dog dhas tv and cot for overnight. During the day, they play around with other doggies. Here's the link http://www.petsmart.com/PETsHOTEL/index.shtml
Second option is further but highly recommended by dog people in long island. DMck signed up her cuties for classes there. Same thing, cageless overnight, all day play with other dogs http://www.lidogcamp.com/overnightcamping.html
I'm FMing you this as well.

Re: We dont know what to do with TINY
I have a woman who watched the dogs in her home. She treats them as if they were her own! I like it because the dogs aren't caged and have contact and affection. She's in Huntington.
Let me know if you want the #.

Re: We dont know what to do with TINY
My friend recommended the woman that takes care of her parents dogs when they go away. He said she charges $25. a day. We called her yesterday and are waiting to hear back from her.
If it doesnt pan out, I will let you know.
Thanks for the hotel website. I will keep that link for future trips. We already booked the steamboat inn in Mystic Scott

PetSmart in Huntington has the Pet Hotel. I hear very good things about it from DH aunt who uses them for her Maltese. Not sure of the cost though :-\

Re: We dont know what to do with TINY
Its probably too expensive for us.
We called the lady that sits dogs again and she didnt get back to us again - I hate when people don't return calls.
We are leaving next wednesday....I hope she calls back......I feel so bad for leaving little Tiny.....

Re: We dont know what to do with TINY
I wish my mom wasn't going through so much with her dogs lately- she does in-house dog sitting and if the circumstances were different she'd have been happy to take Tiny and her rates are reasonable. But let me know in the future because I think you live very close to my parents (they are off Gardiners, near Abbey Lane school).
We used an in-home pet sitter over the summer when we went to Ireland. It was $20 a visit. Since we only had the cats then we only needed one visit a day. We were really pleased. We're up in Putnam but I am sure similar things exist on the Island.
