I brought an injured bird to a vet near rothmanns steak house.... I don't remember the name....but they are right across the street from the steak house..... they do animal rescue there so they won't charge you for the care HTH........

Re: We found an injured bird....

Call STAR foundation.

http://www.savetheanimalsrescue.org/

They rescue and rehab wild animals.

Telephone
Office – (631) 736-8207. The phone is supposed to be staffed 24 hrs. a day.

If they will not take the bird, FM me. Either way, let me know what happens.

Unfortunately I don't think any vet would take it. Birds carry a lot of germs and disease so I would be weary about touching it.

Re: We found an injured bird....

Some rehab places won't take it if it's a non-native bird like the House Sparrow or the European Starling. They are in such abundance, and can be so detrimental to native birds, that some won't help them if they're injured.

I would start with a local animal shelter, vets, and then the larger rehab places if you have no luck.

In the meantime, this might help. Good luck. Chat Icon

My DH is a vet, and he takes in injured birds. I would try STAR first, and if they don't take it, FM me.

Re: We found an injured bird....

We had the same situation a few years back and absolutely NO vets would take the bird. You have to call a WildLife place....I am sorry I don't know any off hand but I'm sure if you googled WildLife Preserves in Long Island you will come up with a couple. I teach Pre School and we just had a group come to teach the children about all sorts of birds...and they talked about never taking in an injured bird and to call them. Unfortunately I don't remember the exact name or number...sorry....Good Luck Chat Icon Keep us updated!

Re: We found an injured bird....

Sweetbriar in Smithtown should take it. I used to work there and we would take alot of the 'undesirable' species that other places rejected - house sparrows, grackles and starlings. Depending on the injury, they work with local vets who will try to repair the injury.
