We got our 2nd puppy (pics included)! Please recommend your trainer
so we went to the Hempstead town shelter. We were looking for a pit mix and on petfinder.com they seemed to have the most. We wanted a younger one, no older then 5 years old. We were hoping to find one that had lived with children since we will have some one day, but no matter what, we knew we wanted to get a trainer.
He's such a lover boy and a big mush. He loves to lay around on blankets, and is very calm considering he is only 5 months old. He was turned in by his family because one of their children was allergic to him. He had only been there 3 Weeks. We met and played with a bunch of dogs, but he seemed the calmest of them all. He already knows how to sit, and listens very well when we say no. But, we still need to get a trainer in. We have a 9 year old pug who isn't loving the idea of him around (although he was depressed when we moved into this house without his buddy-someone else's dog where we used to live)
Please recommend your trainer. We are looking for one that DOES NOT use the shock collar TIA!

thanks. that's what they told us too, Terrier mix, but ours clearly has pit in him along with some boxer

Gorgous. I have 2 Pit mixes. I am not sure where you are located but we use Pet time in West Babylon. The trainers name is Sue and she is absolutly wonderful. We brought our pit mix Phoenix there (she's the youngest). She started at about 8 or 9 months old. She is so much better on a leash and is doing great with sit, stay, heel and all the basics. She graduated a few weeks ago from beginners. We then decided to take Phoenix and Porter (our 3 yr old pit mix) to the advanced classes. Porter already knows his commands from a previous trainer so we went to advanced with him. So far we only did 1 class but i am working with my dogs everyday on what we learned and they are doing great. Like i said, i am not sure where you are located or where you are willing to travel too, but let me know if you want her info and I will FM it to you. Good luck with you new baby!!!!!

He's so cute. If any shelter says terrier mix it usually means some sort of pit in them....its the only way they can get people to adopt dogs that have pit in them cause of the bad reputation.
We are takign our lab/pit mix to Petsmart in Farmingdale for puppy training.
I have heard good things. He starts tonight and I will let you know how it goes.

What an adorable pup!!! Congrats and good for you for rescueing him!!!
We used Barkbusters.com and they do NOT use shock collars.

Just wanted to update......Ou pup went to his first class last night and my DH said the instructor is great and works with rescuing pits besides training at Petsmart.
They use the clicker and my husband thinks it will be a good program. He was in a class with 4 other dogs which I like cause our pup needs to be socialized and since the class is in the store there are lots of distractions which will help in teaching him with his short attention span.

We took our dog to a training class offered through our vet - Towne Line Veterinary Group. We were very happy.

I feel that He should be able to listen and follow instruction by my voice only. if the batteries are dead or I don't have the remote and he runs off, I want him to listen to me. I don't want to have to rely on the collar. He's already following commands and we have only had him for a few days, don't I don't think he will be that hard to train. If regular training doesn't work, I would resort to it, but I don't want to go that route first.

Once I pick up the remote, my dog listens haha. Best Friends does also have traditional leash training if you're interested. They also have puppy classes. They're amazing.

Our trainer is incredible. I cannot say enough about her. She can solve any problem & comes to your house.

so I think we have changed our minds on the shock collar! he is acting so bad and biting non-stop!!! DH is checking out mutt manners web site and I think we might be calling them! He doesn't listen for anything!!!!!!

Not sure where you live, but I took my dog to classes at Happy Dog Behavior in Huntington. Ellen is amazing. She uses positive reinforcement.

She has group classes and also solo lessons.
