We had a scare yesterday
Yesterday, DH and I took the kids to get family pictures done, and afterwards we were going to go to Disneyland. We stopped on the way to grab lunch, and as soon as we got back in the car and on the road, Jayde fell asleep. DH and I were talking and laughing and after about 30 minutes I turned back to see if DD was still asleep. I noticed she had these two bright red marks on her face, but I though she must have been sleeping with her face smashed against one of her toys or something. So, since she was still asleep I just turned back and didn't think anything of it. Well then 5 minutes later, I turned again cause I heard her wake up, and the marks were getting bigger, and it loooked like she had big welts on her face. I unbuckled my seat belt and jumped in the back with her, and she was talking and laughing and all of a sudden she started itching her arm. I pulled her sleeve up and she had the same thing on her arm! I started freaking out and told DH and he said"Maybe something bit her?" And something told me to unbuckle her and check her back, so I did, and OMG! Her entire back was bright red and covered in what looked like welts, it was the worst thing I have ever seen! I started freaking out, and we drove to the closest ER, and they took all of her stats and everything was normal. The doctor came and saw her(finally, after sitting in the hallway of the ER for almost an hour) and it turns out she had an allergic reaction to something she ate, so she had to get a Cortizone shot. I can't tell you how scared I was!
She didn't eat anything out of the ordinary that day, the only thing new she had was a few bites of my almond granola bar, and a drink of my powerade. I was thinking it might be the nuts in the bar but she has had nuts before with no reaction. DO any of your DC's have food allergies, and if so how did you go about finding out?

Re: We had a scare yesterday
It may have been the nuts.
From my understanding, allergies can crop up at any time - sort of like bee stings. You can be stung by a bee maybe 10 times, lets say, and develop an allergy at the 11th sting.
Each time you react, it gets worse, so definitely have her tested so you know how to prevent it, and you may need to carry around an epi pen. I wiork with soooo many kids who have allergies... there are tree nut allergies, which almonds fall into, and peanut allergies but they definitely can happen at any time....
I'm so sorry this happened - she must have been so scared too!!!! Thank God she is ok!!!!

Re: We had a scare yesterday
DS, who is almost 15 has an extreme tree nut allergy, almonds being the worst. When he was about 3 my dad gave him some pistachio ice cream and almost immediately he started, wheezing, his nose snotted up(sorry TMI) and he vomited to hard he broke capillaries in his face. We carry an epi pen and diligently check food labels, it is amazing how so many seemingly innocent foods contain tree nuts. Also if someithing is labeled that is processed in the same facility with tree nuts we don't buy it

How absolutely terrifying that must have been for you Thankfully the shot helped her, how is she doing?

Re: We had a scare yesterday
What does the allergy testing consist of? And how long does it take before they can determine what allergies she has?

She is doing great. She is back to her old self again. It was so sad, when we were in the ER all she wanted to do was sit on mine and DH's lap and snuggle, she normally never wants to sit still. I am so glad she is okay, but so worried about doing tests.

Re: We had a scare yesterday
My oldest always gets welts like that. He even gets them on his scalp and between his legs. I usually give him benedryl and it works.

How scary! I so glad she's ok.
Make an appointment with an allergist. They'll take some blood from her & test it with different substances to see what she is allergic to.
