We just moved into a new house at the end of August. Who do I tip for Christmas and how much?
I was thinking mailman - $50
Maybe UPS guy since he is always delivering stuff to us.
Do I tip the trash guys? Don't our insane taxes take care of them?
Who else?

We give our mailman $50 and even though we have insane taxes AND pay for garbage removal we tipped them $75
ETS: We also moved into our house in August (of last year)

Mailman can't accept more than $20. We give $20 and a batch of homemade cookies. We know him well.
Garbage men - we have a private company and pay big $$$, so we give $10 to each.

We left an envelope in the mailbox for the mail carrier and we taped and envelope to the top of the garbage lid for the garbage guys

We give $60 to the mailman (I'm on a first name basis with him.)
$60-$100 for each garbage man (we have 3.) We mail them the money or try and catch them in the morning. (I wouldn't advise taping an envelope to the garbage can b/c thieves know to drive around neighborhoods at this time of year looking for envelopes taped to a can or in a mailbox.)
I'm torn on UPS. We deal a lot with them (pickups and deliveries almost daily), but I don't think we have a regular/steady driver.

OMG! This will be the 3rd holiday season in my house and I have never tipped anyone. I guess I should be thankful that I still get my garbage picked up and receive my mail.

We have no problem doing this as we don't leave our garbage at the end of our driveway. We're actually not allowed.

That works when you have a private carting service, but most Long Islanders have town service.

Why are the mailmen not allowed to take more than $20? My parents have been giving their mailman $50 for years and he has never refused the cash...

Mailman $50 - he's a great guy and goes above and beyond for us. Plus he's a part of the community.
Garbage Men $25 each (4) - I wish I could give them more because these guys are so great. If anyone on my block forgets to put out their garbage these guys run to the back and get it themselves...plus they put back the cans where they found them  I may have to rethink the amounts.

Last year I did $20 each for the garbage men. I ran out one morning to give it to them and they were gone already. Next time I was able to catch them was after New Years..oh well. I'm sure it was still appreciated.
The mailman got $30 last year.
