we made a stupid mistake re: our kitchen table...
We have an open floor plan and the kitchen table is the main focal point. DH bought a round wood dining table online from JCPenney and it is beautiful. BUT...it is a wood dining room table (not really meant for daily use). We have been carefully wiping it with a damp cloth and drying immedialtley but we are already seeing water marks.
DH wants to put a table cloth on. I don't want to because I wanted the look of a wooden table and that defeats the purpose and we have kids so I would have to wash it nightly. I want to have a glass top made for it ($$$ so DH doesn't like that idea).
Is it possible to treat this table with some sort of a stain or finish that will allow it to be safely used like a kitchen table. Can we do it ourselves or is there someplace that would do it for us?
Sooooo confused and feeling a little stupid about this purchase.
TIA
This is the table

Re: we made a stupid mistake re: our kitchen table...
is the issue using it ? or just it being there in the room. MIL only uses her dining room table to eat (no kitchen area or table) so if she chooses to have the top exposed, then when its dinner time she places one of those table cloth pads and then a table cloth on top. It has kept hers in very nice shape. Her table is oblong so she just bought a pad and cut it to size.

Re: we made a stupid mistake re: our kitchen table...
The only problem with that is we use that table all day long. For Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 2 snack times. (Plus coloring etc) I couldn't imagine putting the pads and cloth on all those times so in the end we would just leave it on and that would bother me

Have a glass guy take a look at it and make a glass top for it. Then you can see the nice wood and clean it easier
My mom did that.

What about placemats with glass/plastic over them? My friend does this and it seems to protect the table pretty well.(The glass squares are the size of the placemat.)

Re: we made a stupid mistake re: our kitchen table...
before you go for the glass top, let me tell you I have a glass kitchen table and HATE it, especially with kids!
The little fingerprints are everywhere - always! And people slam down things down on it not realizing its glass (if there's a tablecloth on it).
I'm ready to get rid of it and get a wood table.

I did this too! my kitchen table is oak and looks like carp already. it's kids, i have come to the resolution that if i stood behind them all day, everyda, something would still happen to it. my kids stabbed my table with forks as if to say "i want my food! I want my food!"
They really aren't beasts...

You can have custom table pads made for the table.
Mine looks like this:

Re: we made a stupid mistake re: our kitchen table...
maybe it's because it is veneer? I have a solid oak table- and I mean solid- not veneer over flake/particle board. I've NEVER had a problem with water marks, staining, etc. Heck, DD even finger paints on it and we use it as our all purpose table. It's over 15 years old and still looks great (it was my dad's first- he made it- then got something new and gave it to me)....

You want to put a poly protective finish on the table. Before doing so check with JCP to find out if this is ok.
This is one...

This seems like a good idea. We recently painted our entire dining room set an off white color (need to post pics), and we are putting something like this over the top to "protect" the paint from chips.
I went to Lowes and spoke to the guy in the paint department and he recommended what to use. I can look at it when I get home, but I am pretty sure it is something like what Jerome posted..

Re: we made a stupid mistake re: our kitchen table...
Furniture stores sell table pads you can put over the top. They are made to look like the top of the kitchen table, but that can be pricy too, but remind DH that it would be a lot pricier to have to buy a new table in a few years

Re: we made a stupid mistake re: our kitchen table...
I would get a table pad to protect it. they come in all different colors. I recently bought a wood dining room table and will do the same.

Re: we made a stupid mistake re: our kitchen table...
I had no idea they made table pads the color of wood. I will look to see if they have something that would be similar to my color table.
And I will definately look into the Minwax.
Thanks for the responses....atleast now I feel like I have some other potential options to bring to DH other than the glass top.

Re: we made a stupid mistake re: our kitchen table...
i grew up with a wood table - we would just eat on hard placemats - and learned to always put one dowm before eating - they were stored in the baker's rack
the placemats look nice are easily wiped down with a damp paper towl

We had a plexiglass top custom made for ours. My dad sells industrial plastics and metal so he had it made for us.

I know pier 1 imports used to sell glass tops in predetermined sizes, you can check there and maybe you won't have to have one custom made.

My MIL has a table pad that's the same color and shape as her table - you really can't tell it's not the actual tabletop.
