We never got the deed to our house!

Who do I contact? I am in an utter panic right now, b/c my Mom just let me know that she is moving into senior housing, and wants us to take her house (she just re-fied & cannot sell for one year). We are thrilled to do it, but now we are selling our house, but we NEVER RECEIVED THE DEED!Chat Icon I already put in a call to my RE atty, but she is out on a closing today. Any thoughts? I think you can contact your Town office. I believe they either have a recorded copy or can put you in touch w/ the office that does that.

The town has it on file. We had a similar problem a few months ago. We had what I thought was the official deed, but it wasn't stamped. Nominal fee at the town, and takes only a few minutes.

I couldn't find the deed when we sold our condo, it didn't really matter because the title co. usually gets a copy of it for the closing.

As long as it was recorded with the town, I would think you are fine, I am sure that lots of people lose their deeds!!!!

I didn't think you're supposed to get a copy as a matter of course. When are you supposed to receive a copy? I know the deed gets filed with the Town Clerk and you can get a copy of it, you could get it from the Town Clerk... but I didn't think most people had copies of their deeds... Do they? Chat Icon When would you receive it? I'm guessing after it's filed?

The Deed gets filed in Riverhead (if you live in Suffolk). They make a copy and the original is sent to whomever is listed for it to go back to on the deed. We list our office and it comes back to us then we send the original to the client and keep a copy for ourselves.
