I would say the party who is serving the alcohol would be responsible. The host could be but I think it would be doubtful.

I think if anyone was hurt later in an accident the lawyers would probably try to draw in any and everyone they could to be held responsible, including the catering hall and the party that hired the hall - they would say it was your decision to pay for and serve the alcohol as well, and perhaps offer open bar, champagne toasts, etc. and therefore you also bear responsibility.

This is what I thought....and this is a concern of my moms since she is technically the host!

However, I don't think it's the hosts responsibility to check ID.

It's the responsibility of those serving the alcohol.

I would let the Catering Manager know of your concern. Then the bartenders can be on the lookout. Plus have someone say something to the girl before the wedding even takes place.

Re: Wedding Related (Sorry) If someone gets drunk at your wedding.....
It's the bride and groom's responsibility (or whoever signed the contract with the hall)
We had a few underagers (who already lost their driver's licenses because of DWI), so I checked into this thoroughly...

if someone under-age is served alcohol at a wedding and God forbid something bad happens, I think it's the resposibility of the catering hall. they're the one's who served him/her.

Just inform the caterers that there should be no underage drinking. Put it in writing and ask them to inform their staff. That will cover you.

Tell them that there will be underage guests there. Definitely put it in writing. If there were to be a law suit, they'd probably name the host, however, the catering hall and bartender would be held liable for serving.
The only issue then becomes, do you want the bartenders IDing everyone all night?
Maybe your mom should just point the girl out to the bartenders in the beginning of the evening?

I agree about having people IDed all night. That would get all and would make the line at the bar a long one. What if they had a stamp and any people whose ID's check out can get a stamp on their hand or a ticket of some sort?

Re: Wedding Related (Sorry) If someone gets drunk at your wedding.....
what makes you think she is going to drink???
when i was 15 i had absolutely no interest in it.
even if the bartender doesnt serve her if she wanted it she could just ask someone else to go up and order it for her.
i wouldnt worry about it at all.

Because I know that her boyfriend drinks on a regular basis and so do the people they hang around with......
My mother is concerned that something will happen and she is the one who is paying...but other people (meaning members of FI's family) don't seem to understand that!

Re: Wedding Related (Sorry) If someone gets drunk at your wedding.....
Don't be surprised if your catering hall will not cooperate with the hand stamping.
They have dealt with this before and will deal with this again. Talk to them. This is something they should handle. As long as you have pointed it out and put it in writing you are covered.
There would be a ton of lawsuits tying up court with people suing their hosts and hostesses for unerage drinking as well as adults that drink too much and go overboard. When you go to a bar it's the responsibility of the establishment to make sure that people that drink are of age and to cut them off if they seem out of control.
