sorry...its wedding related
DH and I just recieved the invitation to his cousin's wedding. The response card listed the 3 meal options and asked us to choose one. The opitions were sword fish, herb crusted chicken and prime rib.
Do you think that its strange to ask people to choose their meals 2 and 1/2 months in advance?

For out of the tri-state area, I would say it's completely the norm.

Most weddings that I have been to out of the tri-state area ask you what meal you would like with on the response card...

The only wedding we've been to that did this was in Tahoe. I thought it was strange too.

I think that's pretty common in some areas of the country.

do you think that they can make a change last minute if needed. the reason I ask this is because I checked off the chicken....but now I'm thinking I should have had DH order the chicken and me the prime rib....since I couldn't stand the sight, smell or idea of eating shicken with my 1st pregnancy

Re: sorry...its wedding related
I think a last minute change is ok. Or you could contact the person and let them know that you have changed your meal.
Any of the weddings I have attended out of state have asked me for my meal choice on the response card.

Re: sorry...its wedding related
We did this... only because we had such an array of meals - fish, steak, vegetarian and vegan - it was a way for us to keep costs down - our vendor agreed to cut a certain percentage off the price per person if we agreed to give them an approximate count for each meal so they wouldn't waste food by overestimating...

Re: sorry...its wedding related
We had this twice last year- at a wedding in Cape May, NJ and a wedding in Seattle, Wa. Both times there was some sort of indicator on our placecard that told the waiter what we had ordered, so I'm not sure if we would have been able to change it the day of. I'm sure if you call her before the wedding and tell her to switch it she can, just give her some notice.

This makes me think of the King of Queens episode with Arthur

Re: sorry...its wedding related
Weddings out of state do this.
I went to one in MD two weeks ago and it was chicken or beef.
I chose both just to be a PIA.

I've had to do that for a lot of weddings I've been too. Even local ones. Half the time I end up changing my mind anyway.

Re: sorry...its wedding related
We did this for a wedding in Albany - and that was the exact count of meals that the hall made - I know this because we had both ordered the chicken parm, and the waiter came over and said the only thing left was a stuffed chicken because "apparently someone took something they hadn't checked on their card" so it was the only meal left - we still get a chuckle out of it!

Re: sorry...its wedding related
It is very common. Actually I was more familar with this than they other way untill recently.
Sometimes DH forgets & on the way to the wedding ask me if he already picked his dinner & doI rember what he picked.
It's not just something the couple chose to do to be weird, the hall requires it.
If you just rsvp'd & want to change your mind, you could probably call the couple now, but as was posted above, the hall may only have exactly what was ordered (unless there are no shows)

Re: sorry...its wedding related
that is very common for out of state weddings. We went to a wedding in Saratoga and had to choose our meal with the response... the only problem we had was the night of everyone changed their choice and instead of getting chicken (because they ran out) i got some concoction they made up or pasta and vegetables.

Re: sorry...its wedding related
I was just talking to a friend who is from MA about this. She said when she got my invitation and didn't see choices she thought there wasn't even going to be a choice. I told her no, there are 7 choices that you choose when you are at the wedding. She thought it was strange. I think it's strange to choose way in advance, what if I change my mind?
And at a wedding I went to in RI last summer there wasn't any choice at all - they only had fish.

Re: sorry...its wedding related
I have seen this a lot at weddings outside of NY/NJ metro area. It really does seem to be common in other areas. We were invited to a wedding in Buffalo and had to pre-select our meal.
My personal advice - do not order the fish.
