Weird phone call last night-burglary related
Last night the phone rang a little past 11pm...I answered b/c DH as in the bathroom. A male on the other line asked for my DH and if he was home. I asked who was calling and he gave me some bogus name...I told him to hold on while I got DH...by the time DH got on the phone, the line was dead.
DH says that phonecalls like that are typical of some burglars, who call to see if people are home before they plan to rob a house? Anyone heard of this before? I was SUPER freaked out...we have an alarm system and three BIG dogs, so I think anyone stupid enough to break in, wouldn't be so happy...but it was still a really scary thought.

That IS scary and I have heard of it before. My other thought though is that the kids are finishing up school, if they haven't already, and probably just prank calling people at random. I wouldn't worry too much with your alarm system and doggies.

My mom has had 2 phonecalls like that - using her name and everything. She decided after the 2nd one to use call trace and if she gets another she can file a police report. It's $1 to do the call trace, but I think piece of mind.

That is freaky! I would have been creeped out for sure. And I sleep alone at night as the hubby works nights...

That is scary! I have caller ID where the phone in our bedroom also has it on "speaker" as the phone is supposed to be ringing, the number is said out loud and then stays displayed on the screen.
I would have probably thought it was a prank of some kind, or, told DH to call the number on the screen back. The caller would have known we have the number now.
Also, there is *69 which I use often too.
If it comes up private, then, if it continues, I would have the cops try and trace it.

we do have caller Id and the number came up private...is there a way to trace a private number if it happens again?

OMG that is soooo scary
I duno how you got to sleep after that.
Thats good you have an alarm, and 3 big dogs, i dont think anyone would be that dumb to break in.
eta: you can also call your phone company and have them make it so you can not accept private numbers.
My inlaws have this, and there is no way you can call with a blocked or private number.

yes i've heard that....they call to make certain there is nobody home. scary! i would have freaked out as well, especially since i'm home alone with my kids..........dh works nights.

I think my parents did that a few years ago...but some family members gave them a hard time with it....I think its a good idea, I'm going to talk with DH about it later and see if we can call about it....I think it would def put my mind at ease.
oh yeah and BTW: I didn't sleep good last night...every little sound I woke up and it took forever to fall back asleep.

That is so weird. But thank goodness nothing happened. Is your number also published? If so I would call up the phone co and ask to be unpublished. We did that and it saved on all the prank calls.

Yeah, DH's name and our address is in the phonebook...I'm going to have him call and unpublish it! Thanks totally forgot about that!
