For the first year we are renting in the city. We are paying 1800 a month-1 month security and $250 dog deposit (2 large dogs) As far as home prices they really vary in the area. Charleston is set up somewhat similar geographically to LI, SI, NYC etc. The city is a peninsula, then there are various outer islands and two nearby inland areas called Mt. Pleasant and West Ashley. Some of the islands are million dollar plus properties. The northern part of th city is REALLy cute and parts of it are being regentrified where I would like to buy(Wagener Terrace) The houses ae mostly Craftsman, Greek revival and victorian. In Mt. Pleasant there are TONS of master planned communities with clubhouses, post modern victorians, parks pools-very family oriented. The schools have all been rated good or excellent.
W Ashley has some older homes and is more like LI I guess with different style homes.

ETA: I didn't even answer your question. For what we are looking for 3-4 BD 2 ba roughly between 250-350 K and prices are going down! if we wanted more of a starter home or condo we could get something for 170-250K I think

Gorgeous house, Charlseton is so nice, it was where my DH"s second choice was for his internship. We had been looking at apartments in James Island, I would've loved being so close to the ocean again. Although apartment rentals were fairly expensive there- almost as much as our NY apartment, which was all the way out in Port Jeff.
Instead, we're in Pittsburgh. Oh well.
