Went to Blydenburgh Dog Park Today... *updated - went again today*
Was anyone else there??
Ya know, I love it there and we almost NEVER have problems so I can't get too upset but... today there were quite a few dogs with some pretty severe aggression issues.
There were MANY fights and they got quite vicious. One woman, a first timer, was attacked by two dogs at once - she was just standing there so scared holding her dog praying for them to stop while her three YOUNG children screamed in fear hysterically - it was BAD. I was so upset b/c the owners of the dogs who were attacking just do not have control over their dogs.
It got to the point where about three or four dogs in particular just kept attacking various dogs - almost every five minutes. Finally, one guy (after his dog got in FOUR fights) took the dog and left - I mean, it takes four fights for you to realize you need to leave? The other dogs were worse! These people are oblivious! I'm the type - I believe all dogs are good - I think their owners are to blame.
We, as a result, pretty much stayed in the "small dog area" - it is sad to me and I feel bad for the dogs - it is not their fault - it is the responsibility of the owners to raise their dog right, correct any bad behavior and stay on top of them when in public. I think dog parks are a wonderful thing but there are handfuls of owners who could ruin it for all of us and that is such a shame.
Vent over.

Re: Went to Blydenburgh Dog Park Today...
We (Gerty and I) met a guy with a Weimeraner the other day who was coming from the dog run, saying the same thing - that the dogs were fairly aggressive in there.
Scout and Misty go on the trails at Blydenburgh. We rarely run into anyone else. They run off leash and play like crazy. We get some exercise too, so we never go to the dog run. Can you take your dog on the trails instead??
I took Scout once to the dog run at Cedar Creek - never again. People think they can take their dogs, let them loose and have no responsibility - shame on them!

Re: Went to Blydenburgh Dog Park Today...
I took Misty there once and it was the only time she wouldn't leave my side.
She had absolutely no interest in playing with any of the dogs. Although there were no real fights, there were a couple scuffles and the owners moved in to seperate them.
I ended up walking Misty on the trails that day because she certainly wasn't playing with the other dogs and getting exercise.
The only places she has played with other dogs are Gardiners and Coindre Hall (which we don't go to anymore cuz they started giving tickets).

I also take JJ on the trails there and let him roam without leash. I haven't tried the dog run yet though but with this post it seems I am in no rush to do so.

Re: Went to Blydenburgh Dog Park Today...
I am there with both of my small dogs at least 3 times a week, and every Sunday. I feel bad because although my dogs are small they really prefer the big area beacuse they like to play with bigger dogs, and I can't let them go in there anymore. At first it was fine, but I feel like none of the dog owners even look after their dogs in the big area. They area always just socializing with others (which is fine) but last Sunday there were 2 dogs which were medium sized, but only about 6 months old and they got attacked. The owner got the poor dogs out before they got too hurt but the other dogs were picking them up by their necks and the puppies were screaming..it was terrible. None of the other dogs owners even came to see what was going on. I really enjoy going there and my don't get me wrong dogs will be dogs, even one of mine will bark a bit at a dog if it's bothering her...but when there is an obvious issue going on and an owner isn't aware or caring enough to do so, it's just wrong.

EXACTLY!
Charlotte prefers the larger dogs - she ADORES german sheps and dobermans - her fave types! She was whining yesterday while inside the smaller area to go play with the big dogs - esp when she saw two german's come in i felt so bad for her.
I totally agree with you - we had the same thing happen.

Two friends of mine brought their dogs there and had a problem with aggressive dogs. I am so glad I haven't taken Madison there. She also loves playing with the bigger dogs. I am going to try the trail. Thanks!!

I feel so bad for my two dogs bc when we go we bring my parents lab with us...he goes in the big area and they just sit at the fence and cry when he comes running by because they don't understand why they can't be in there with him...it's so sad! LOL

Re: Went to Blydenburgh Dog Park Today...
Seems on avg its a different crowd (aggresive).
I perfer Gardners Park (no dog run, just trails) and West Hills.... Very rarely, do I see a fight between dogs. And if there is one, the owner is right on top of it.

We've gone several times to the small dog section, which has been fine, but I have noticed aggression in the big dog section

Re: Went to Blydenburgh Dog Park Today... *updated - went again today*
*update*
took char again today - this time with DH - and it was much better. there were little spats here and there but all in all - a much better day. it seems as though, from what i heard by talking to others, that it is the same two or three dogs that are always probs - today, as we were entering, one of those "problem" dogs was leaving - a boxer. infact, funny - just so happens that all three of the dogs people were complaining about are boxers - all owned by different people. weird.
anywho, we took char in the big dog park - she did great. we actually saw her vet there with his dog - whom she ADORES so that was nice. and the vet's daughter, who spends time at the office, loves char! then - she ran around and really enjoyed herself.
we then took her into the smaller area b/c there were TONS of small dogs in there - she loved it.
after that we took her on the trails which she REALLY loved. we have never done that before with her - she was running around, climbing, jumping - and we went all the way down the the water (a river that runs through there - is it nissequogue??) it was beautiful - we can't wait to go again and we are thrilled for the spring/summer!!!

Re: Went to Blydenburgh Dog Park Today... *updated - went again today*
I'm so glad you updated. Blydenburgh would be where we would bring dogs (when we get them) and I was worried about unattentive owners and aggressive dogs.
I didn't know that the dogs were allowed on trails too. That's wonderful! Sounds like a good compromise, if the trouble dogs are in the run.
Does it cost money to get into Blydenburgh? I was thinking of getting an Empire Pass this year, for birding in Caleb Smith, Sunken Meadow, and Blydenburgh.
I love that there are so many parks around.

That sounds like fun!!! Where is that, in Smithtown? And by the trails, are dogs leashed? Is there a path to walk on? Dirt or other?
Sounds like a fun day, glad the babe is home fast asleep from her fun day!

Re: Went to Blydenburgh Dog Park Today... *updated - went again today*
Here's some info on Blydenburgh:
Suffolk County Dog Parks Blydenburgh Dog Park This newly opened park is located within 627-acre Blydenburgh County Park in the southern section of the park. The 1.8-acre dog park includes both an open field and woods, a small dog area and a large dog area, water fountains for each area, doubled-gated entries, and plenty of benches and waste bag dispensers.
This is a beautiful facility for dog lovers, with lots of shade provided in both the large and small dog areas. The Suffolk County Parks Department did a great job constructing this park and a lot of people have worked hard to get it open. Please don't bring dogs that have aggression issues as the dog park is definitely not the place to work on them! Many thanks to Legislator John Kennedy, the Suffolk County Parks Department, and all the members of LI-DOG who worked to get this park built. Enjoy the park with your dogs but please pick up after your them and please take good care of the park.
There is an active group at Blydenburgh called "The Friends of Blydenburgh Dog Park". Their goal is to create a sense of community among the dog owners there, and also to promote harmony and safety for all who use the park. To find out more go to the Blydenburgh Dog Park website.
Directions: The entrance to the park is on Veterans Memorial Highway, opposite the H. Lee Dennison Building. Once you enter the park go past the Parks Police booth and follow the sign pointing to the activity field on which the dog park is located.
The Doggy Site the INFO is Listed On

it never costs anything for us to get in - i don't know if that will change when the nice weather comes but i don't think so. with the one in huntington, though, it never cost anything and for over a year we took her for free but then all of a sudden they put a booth in and started taking five dollars each time - weird. i don't know if that will happen at blydenburgh or not??
this park is really beautiful - i have lived in smithtown my whole life and never really went there - now, i want to go all the time - that river was GORGEOUS and she really loved it.

yes, it is smithtown - directions (i just posted) are above. there's also info from a dog website...
the trails are actually part of the dog park - there is the fenced part and then there are trails behind it that are for dogs - and they are allowed off leash w/o a prob! she loved the freedom and the paths are carved out but then there are high hills around the paths to climb - so, she was jumping and climbing - i've never seen this side of her - she really let loose! the trails are dirt - they are well worn which is great - i didn't worry at all. and overall, i was very pleased - the park is very clean and i can't wait for the weather to get better and better. when it gets warm we are going to take a picnic there and go with her - it looked as though the trails went all the way around the water and then back - so beautiful - we are excited.

There is a fee if you aren't county residents - I think it was $5. This is during the "season" - prob. Memorial Day to Labor day.
