We're home! Updated with birth story...
So, I was induced on Wednesday and delivered within 6 hours. After 15 minutes of pushing, our 8+ lb bundle of joy arrived as healthy and happy as can be!
I love being a mom 100% more than being pregnant!

So, we get in way early (5am) since I refused to be turned away again since I was supposed to be induced on Dec 29th but got turned away because it was full. We are all settled in by 7am and the doc comes in at 8am and starts up the pitocin to get there contractions really going. They also make them more painful. So, the nurse keeps walking in like every 10 minutes and cranks it up. Holy crap I was hoping to go without an epi but in my exact words - "if you're going to keep doing this with the pit, I'm gonna need an epidural." I actually tolerated them great to 4cm and then went from 4 to 8 in an hour - pretty quick clip. Those were PAINFUL but if I knew they would stop at 20 I might not have gotten the epi. I thought she was going to go to the max of 20.
My old classmate Chris from med school did the epi and got it in the first shot. I owe him my comfortable and easy labor. I tried to duke it out with a low dose but had to take some boluses. I let them stay as painful as I could tolerate. Within I think 3 hours of starting the pit I was fully dilated. Holy cow. But he was still high, so she let me sit there and let him come down the canal on his own. I just gotta say this Ob is a genius. By 1:30pm I was ready to push but she let him keep coming down and she had other deliveries as well. By 2ish or so she thought I was ready. 15 minutes later Ryan was born. I didn't even need to give that last push, he just came out on his own!
I do remember almost everything. I still laugh when I think of the nurse or Ob asking me if I wanted to feel the head. Hell no! Let's get to work and get him outta me!
I wouldn't change a thing. I'd still work as hard and late as I did as this probably made things relatively easy. Holding off on the epi was great - I had control the whole time and recovery after was quick. So quick that I felt guilty in the discharge class when all the women were walking around in their robes and uncomfortable while I was sitting around in street clothes ready to go home within 24 hours.
I LOVE my Ob group. Drs Welichar, Porte, and OKeefe, you're the best! Just my kinda doctors I want to take care of me or anyone else. Carefully agressive.
Being a patient instead of a doctor at SB was interesting. It really does feel like everything takes an eternity. Waiting for 2 hours to get to the mother baby unit seemed like a week but there were many other women who delivered before me and I had to wait. And it did feel like delivering at home. I had a friend bring me sushi, people smiling at me saying they recognized me. Co-interns popping in and out throughout the day and evening. Even the transport person recognized me! Our families were great and visited often.
OK, time for me to get back to our little boogie (nicknamed so because of his affinity for salsa music in utero).
I've always heard of postpartum depression but people forget to mention the potential for postpartum ELATION. I love my two guys more than ever!
