West Babylon and Huntington Station
Please don't judge me for sounding stupid! LOL.
We are currently house hunting and I am still learning different neighborhoods on LI. Are these good neighborhoods? What are the less desirable neighborhoods? FM me if you don't want to post here. Everyone keeps telling me to look at school districts but I don't know what I am looking for. Any info or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: West Babylon and Huntington Station
What made you pick those two towns in the first place because they are not close to each other.
There are good and bad parts to hunt station. Depending on which area you'd be in Walt Whitman or huntington sd. Some parts of the station have high ms13 gang activity and aren't so great. Being close to hunt train station could be a pro because its end of line/beginning of line so you'd always get a seat if you commute!
I don't know much abt Babylon except that it is way further south.

Re: West Babylon and Huntington Station
I think you'd probably be better off in West Babylon, but it also depends what you are looking for and where you want to be near to. West Babylon is on the south shore, Huntington is north.
IMO the South shore is drastically different from the North.
We have friends that had a nice house in Huntington Station, but after several people were shot and killed down the block from gang related activity, they quickly sold and got out of there.
Especially because they have young children.
Not the type of place you want to raise kids.

Re: West Babylon and Huntington Station
Ah! Thanks for the replies. one of DH's friends said to avoid Huntington Station but the houses look so nice!
I am looking for an affordable neighborhood with good schools and up to an hour (maybe a little more) commute to Penn. Picking the neighborhoods was kind of a crap shoot and based on price.
We are looking in East Meadow, Farmingdale, Bethpage, Mineola, and Westbury. Are there any other cities you recommend? Thanks!

West Babylon and Huntington Station
Look at Lindenhurst!! We moved here 9 years ago and have never regretted it. Affordable, good schools, tight community, good for commuting.

Re: West Babylon and Huntington Station
I'm in Amity Harbor (still a pretty diverse school district) but we were hit pretty hard by Sandy, so I don't think you will want to look here.
My ILs are all in Seaford. Some below Merrick Rd; some above Sunrise.
Massapequa is also a nice area.
I work in Babylon Village and am always in Lindenhurst and West Babylon. All nice areas.
These are all south shore towns though. Some higher income than others.
Seaford has a express train to/from the city during rush hour.
There are some knowledgeable realtors on here. I recommend hooking up with one of them to discuss your needs.
Of the towns you mentioned too, I think they are all pretty decent areas. I have heard certain parts of Westbury can be a little sketchy.

I second Seaford. We just bought here and love it. DH travels to the City every day on the express. It is such an easy commute!

Re: West Babylon and Huntington Station
We looked in West Babylon and Lindy, both nice. There are parts of W. bab that go to Wyandanch schools though, I would look into that before buying.
I love the South Shore. I don't know anything about HS, or the North Shore at all really.
I wanted to buy in Nesconset, I LOVE it there but DH would not commute. It's a great area... Smithtown schools are a little better than Sachem from what I've heard.
Babylon is nice, Brightwaters, Oakdale, Sayville... All really nice places on the South Shore. Dix Hills is nice.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! How do you find out about the schools? Is it more word of mouth or is there a good website?

My co-worker doesn't have kids but lives in W Babylon and it's the part in Wyandanch. That's a pretty rough district.
Also, parts of Eastern Massapequa I believe are in the Amityville SD which is also pretty rough from what I've been told. Beautiful houses in South Amityville, but I know a few people from there and they all went to private school.

Re: West Babylon and Huntington Station
Newsday posts school ratings... You can google it. That and word of mouth.
Most LI schools are good. Places like Brentwood, CI, HS... it's not really the school that's the problem, it's gang violence.
Also, if your child needs services you want to look into a district that's good with that type of thing. Even if you don't have kids it's important, IMO.
There is a lot that goes into it. There are a few good agents on here that seem to know what they're talking about. I would FM them.

Westbury south of Old Country Road is better than north. Basically houses in Westbury that are zoned for East Meadow SD are good.

Absolutely. Lindenhurst hits all your criteria. I used to commute to NYC and some of the express trains get you in in less than an hour. There is ample parking as well. Houses are reasonably priced and its a very strong community. The schools are great both academia and sports. I highly recommend it. I also recommend looking in areas located within the village.

NO NO NO to Huntington Station.
Why do you say this? South Huntington is nice and it's considered Huntington Station. Every town for the most part has its "bad" sections. I may be bias as I live in South Huntington but I used to live in Babylon Village and I can tell you I am happier in South Huntington then I would of been in West Babylon. Not knocking WB. To get back on topic it all comes down to personal preference and lifestyle. If the OP has any questions about HS please fell free to PM me.

oh, forget it. I just would never live there for reasons that are no big secret but I am glad you are happy there. Different strokes for different folks.

West Babylon and Huntington Station
W. Babylon is huge. You DEFINITELY want to look into school district before looking at houses there. DH & I moved to W. Babylon this year. Previously we lived in N. Babylon. We are in a part of W. Babylon that goes to N. Babylon schools (where DH went to school). My aunt lives in W. Babylon an her kids go to Babylon schools. Another friend lives in W. Babylon and it's in W. Babylon district. You want to stay away from Wyandanch district- not because the school is necessarily terrible, I actually used to work there and the staff is great, but because the gang activity is dangerous! With that being said, there is gang activity in a lot of towns, so make sure to visit the house during the night to check out the area :) Good luck!!!

Re: West Babylon and Huntington Station
While Huntington Station/South Huntington - School District 13 has it's issues.....it also has it's good neighborhoods. My suggestion would be to stay in district 13, but drive around the neighborhood and really look or check the crime rates for that area.

Re: West Babylon and Huntington Station
I looked in west babylon when buying a house. There are some nice parts but you just have to watch what school district you are in. We ended up buying a house in Lindenhurst. My dh and I both grew up here and honestly din't have any complaints. Our house was reasonable, we pay low taxes, and the school district is good.

West Babylon and Huntington Station
Like any school district in any area, there is good and bad. Two sites that I always suggest my clients go to is greatschools.org. and schools.newsday.com. In addition, posting to forums such as this and city-data.com to solicit opinions is also a great idea. As for what to look for, great schools.org ranks them on a scale from 1-10, so that can be helpful. You also can look at test scores and percentage going to four year schools. However, every bit of data provided can be helpful, if only to use it as a point of comparison.
Leb also had good suggestions. Many people that I work with who are commuting to Penn choose to live in Greenlawn, which is part of the Harborfields school district. It all depends on your budget too.
If you have any questions about the Huntington/North Shore area, I'd be happy to answer them.

I live in, and am very happy with, South Huntington. It's very safe and convenient to everything. I am happy with the schools. We have wonderful parks and an amazing library. There are good and bad areas in every town.

What about Melville? Clost to Huntington but with better schools and great access to the highways. THe only thing I don't like about the area is that it is a big congested.

Really good point. With any town, it's so important to look at the actual school district and what the specific neighborhood is like. The actual name of the town, IMO, is the least important factor out of these three.
You have some highly desirable named towns located on the border of undesirable named towns. It doesn't mean that one block is beautiful and wonderful and the other is ridden with crime. They could both be very nice or both be awful....like I said, it depends on the neighborhood and school district.
You have to think of how "bad" is being defined too. When I hear people call certain neighborhoods "bad," it makes me realize that they have never truly seen an area that is really full of crime, gangs, and so forth.
