Westfield/Sunrise Mall - your thoughts

I have never been to this mall. Would you say it is ok, good, etc? As safe as Roosevelt Field or less safe? (I know Roosevelt Field some people are afraid of but I am never afraid, if I park pretty close to the entrance. I go there alone all the time.)

Would you go to Sunrise/westfield alone during the day?

Thanks!

Re: Westfield/Sunrise Mall - your thoughts

Went with DH for the first time a few weeks ago. Seemed ok...far less crowded then RF. It's like Broadway Mall in Hicksville

And I love Broadway mall for that reason. But I am never afraid to go there alone, so wondering if Sunrise mall is about as safe or less safe generally speaking "during the day" for a lone woman.

Re: Westfield/Sunrise Mall - your thoughts

the mall isn't bad - I don't go there too often alone - I may be a LITTLE iffy at night, just because the parking lot isn't as well lit as other places.

go there alone in the daytime all the time...I love it because it is not crowded at all...you can always find a spot by the mall entrance by macys too.if I do go there at night I park right outside the door to Jcpenney, its better lit over there and there is always parking right near the door

Re: Westfield/Sunrise Mall - your thoughts

I get confused... is this the Massapequa Mall or the South Shore Mall on Sunrise in Bay Shore that you are talking about?

Massapequa Mall

I personally think it went downhill years ago. It use to be the best mall in the area but now, I rather drive to Bay Shore. The traffic in there i think is just odd because you have all these "not as friendly towns" people just hanging like they own the joint.

Yes, the food court was much needed in the mall and i don't like the idea of a walmart in a mall but other then that, it has the same stores as other malls..

I'll go alone with the kids during the day, but not in the evening or at night.

We know one of the architechts who worked on refurbishing the mall when Westfield took over. They were really trying to get rid of Walmart, but they have an ironclad long term lease from the previous owner.

I agree. I lived 5 minutes from Sunrise and would always take DS to Roosevelt field. If I only needed to go to one or two stores then I went to Sunrise but I wasn't crazy about it.
IMO they need to get rid of those clothing stores geared towards the pre-teen age like Rave Girl and put in some better stores and I think the mall will turn around. I also think putting Walmart there a mistake. They should have put it where the Wiz use to be.

Re: Westfield/Sunrise Mall - your thoughts

Sunrise Mall doesn't bother me too much. I don't go there often, but when I do go I never have a problem.

Although, I have to agree with others - Walmart was the worst store they could have added.

Re: Westfield/Sunrise Mall - your thoughts

fine during the day, wouldnt go alone at night.

they need some higher end stores there - coach, banana republic, ann taylor, etc. I went there (when i lived near there) to get something from Macys or the Gap. After the Limited closed I lost all faith in that place!

Re: Westfield/Sunrise Mall - your thoughts

I lived behind sunrise mall for most of my life. I walked to and from it when I worked there in my teens (across the parking lot, to our fence which had a door in it) I never once had a problem. Since Westfield took over the mall it has improved SO much.

ETA: They are REMOVING wal-mart!!! There is that new huge one on 110 The plan is to bring in some more high end stores to 'upgrade' it a bit.

Edited to say:
Walmart brought such a poor client base that it really did drag the mall down. I think that was part of the reason that Westfield decided to purchase the property.. To raise it up and slap their name on it..

I personally think this statement can refer to the Bay Shore Mall as well. I live right near Massapequa Mall & always have, so that coul dbe part of my reason. BUT I think that there are going to be undesirables hanging around in ANY mall, so just keep your eyes open & be aware.

I have no problem going there alone day or night. BUT I agree that the parking lot is not as well lit as other malls though, the Walmart was the worst thing they could have done, and it has gone downhill recent years.

Despite all that, I grew up going to this mall so I have no "fear" of it and I don't think I ever will.

Re: Westfield/Sunrise Mall - your thoughts

Lived in Massapequa all my life. Always go during the day, never at night. Never did. I don't allow my 14 ds to hang out there either. I do have to say that it has gotten nicer since Westfield took over. It does need some higher end stores. As for the tween stores. You have to remember, there is a huge market for this area in clothes. My daughter is a reminder of this. I go if I need something quick or can find it there. Otherwise I usually head up to Walt Whitman.

Re: Westfield/Sunrise Mall - your thoughts

Growing up in Seaford I hated to go here when I was young and went to RF..Now I live 5 minutes from here and go there all the time..they have beefed up security and thier presence is felt and I think the mall knows what a bad image it had in the past and is trying everything to change that. I would go daytime but I would probably not go to any mall alone at night..almost an invite at any mall. I now love Sunrise Mall and go in and out in 15 minutes if I need something. Chat Icon

I have zero problems going there during the day alone. I always park at Macy's (which has a great shoe dept. by the way).

I agree.. I love the fact that i can just walk in, get what I want and walk out. RF is just too busy for me and the kids.

I also like their play area (like Broadway Mall's) and their family lounge.

Wal-Mart grosses me out. I do not shop there and I agree about it dragging down an area.

So is it true? It Wal-Mart leaving? Can we find that info anywhere on the web? I would be happy if it left there.

And where is this "Bayshore" mall? Can anyone direct me to a website, etc, for hte Bayshore mall?

Thank you all for replying!!!

ETA - Also, did you all hear about the townhomes, etc they are building by the mall? Called the Seasons at Massapequa. Hopefully this will improve the look and feel of the Mall area.

Re: Westfield/Sunrise Mall - your thoughts

it's safe during the day- i used to live in mass and would go there alot as a kid. i worked in sterns for years- it was safe but they would always have you walk out with someone and there were alot of cars that got stolen at night.

good to pick up quick things- they have H&M and vistoria secrets also.

Re: Westfield/Sunrise Mall - your thoughts

it def went downhill from what it used to be. So many good stores left and now it is like independent stores it reminds me of the old busy bee flea market. JMO a waste of time to go to unless u know what u need to get and where to go. I dont like window shopping here
