I don't ask for much. A "thank you for all that you do" and a positive comment here and there does it for me. I have worked in places that have only focused on the negative. Acknowledgment of hard work and dedication makes me feel like I am appreciated.

I think when they asked me this in the interview for my job I said a pacing calendar and clear communication about curriculum, expectations, etc.

In reality, my administration doing ANYTHING besides sending an occasional memo about nonsense would make me feel supported.

MORE focusing on the positive, appreciation & recognition that teaching is a HARD job, taking teacher's concerns & suggestions seriously

LESS micromanaging, nitpicking, intimidation, unrealistic expectations, and passing the blame for everything onto the teachers

Yes!!!!

I currently have a fairly new AP that is just awesomely supportive. Don't get me wrong he/she is not perfectChat Icon

He/she recently observed me and it was such a nice experience. I think so many admins are told that they must find "something" so they nitpick... I refer to it as the, "Your window blinds are not straight" SyndromeChat Icon I've been teaching for 16 years now... many more lessons than not are "spot on".

This same administrator recently wrote a nice note in my lesson plan book (yeah, they are still required to) thanking me for my work on an ongoing dept. issue. It took an extra minute but given that each of our AP's have also absorbed dept. chairperson (they were eliminated in our latest budget) duties on top of the myriad of other responsibilities they have... I really appreciated the time and thought it took.

This same person always tries to defer a parental inquiry to the teacher first instead of settling parental issues w/o the teacher's knowledge.

Oh, and let's not forget about the free bagelsChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon When we recently evacuated due to a bomb scare, as a thank you for our efforts, administration bought the faculty bagelsChat Icon Chat Icon It was a nice gesture.

Re: What actions make you feel supported as a teacher from your administration?

IDK, my administration is very supportive and complimentary. I never feel like they pick on us or ask for unrealistic things. I do, however, have a problem when they side with parents without asking me about the situation first.

I had a student that "earned" the privilege of staying after school for activities (MS) and if he didn't behave and earn it, he had to go home. The parent told the teacher that it was an inconvenience for her to have her son home at the "normal time" and needed the extra care (for a 13yr old) at school. The principal sided with her and told me he had to stay. The kid became a NIGHTMARE and I had no other reinforcer for him anymore. He didn't care if he missed lunch, and I sure as hel1 wasn't going to have him spend the time with me afterschool instead of going to the program! THAT's my gripe!
