What age can they start Pre K?? Im really upset right now

We were looking to enroll Anthony in Catholic Pre - K for next year.
I just looked on the website for the school we are interested in and it says for Pre K the child MUST BE 4 by Dec. 1st of that year.
Anthony wont be 4 until late January.

BUT my Nephew who is exactly 3 months older is ALREADY in public school Pre-K

Is it different rules about when you can start for public and catholic schools???

I think is ABSURD that my son who is only 3 months younger then his cousin will be behind him 2 YEARS in his educationChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

See I don't mind him even being 1 year behind b/c of his birthday. But 2 years?!?!? My nephew will be 3 in Oct. and he is already in Prek. So that means the cutoff was probably to be 3 years old by December.

But for catholic school its you have to be 4 years old by DecemberChat Icon

I think it depends on the school district where you live or the particular school when it's private. When my youngest brother was going to school we lived in Uniondale. He made the cut off date bc his b-day is Dec 1st. If he was born a few hours later then he'd have to wait a whole yr.

Good Luck!

3 is awfully young for a pre-K. Most Pre-ks the children start the year being 4 and turn 5 during the school year. Most kids start kindergarten at 5 ( 4 if their birthday is after the first day of school). DOes that make sense?

ETA: Is he is preschool or pre-K? there is a difference

Which catholic school? Did you all the others in the area like St. Kevin's in Auburndale. Does St. Andrew's have a school? Maybe each catholic school is different? Good LuckChat Icon

My son will be 3 next month and is in preK, he's the youngest in the class. But he will go again next year as well. Your nephew must be doing another year of preschool, it doesnt make sense that he'd be going into going into kindergarten next year.

I taught pre-k in catholic school for 3 years before I started teaching in Brooklyn. I taught at the Academy of St. Joseph in Brentwood. We accepted 3 year olds no problem into the program as long as they were potty trained. There is also an awesome montessori preschool on campus that accepts 3 year olds that I would recommend highly.

I'm a catholic school teacher also & at my school in Woodside we accept 3 year olds as well--some of them take a 2nd year, but his bday is fairly close, as well as he can keep up, I'm sure they'd pass him on.

You can also try OLBS in Bayside or St. Marys in Flushing or St. Roberts. EVERY school is different.
