What are Some Things You Never Thought...
You would do as a parent? Back before you had children and still had starry-eyed notions about parenting?
Miss events because of naptime or bedtime--I would teach my child to go with the flow
Value a peaceful shower as much as I do
Value sleep
Feed my kid fishsticks or chicken nuggets (I always thought parents who did this were lazy or into junky food, but some may have been like me, scrambling for any protein source their child will eat besides cheese)
Let him watch TV before 2
Buy Elmo stuff
Yell--I haven't much, but there have been a few times
Do battle with another Mom for my kid's pail and shovel when her kid decided to take it since it was unattended briefly
Learn the names of so many different kinds of trucks.
Never realized I would need to stifle laughter when he is trying to figure a way around our rules--too funny sometimes!

Re: What are Some Things You Never Thought...
I only have a four month old, but I still have a list.
*no tv before age 2 (watches in the am while i'm in the shower) * no paci (I lasted 1 1/2 days after DS was born) * I would not let myself go (not really let myself go, but I do nothing for myself anymore - I wanted to be a MLF, not even close now)

Re: What are Some Things You Never Thought...
Well, DS is only 6 months old, but I think the biggest thing is letting him watch so much TV.
Sometimes I feel like such a BAD parent but it's the only major thing to keep his focus when I am home with him trying to get work done.
Thankfully, most of my work is done on my laptop so I am sitting within his sight, and also talking and interacting with him as well while I am working.

The only thing really is the food. I wasn't going to give her processed food. That went out the window-she has chicken nuggets, mac and cheese etc.

I know, I wasn't either, but it's hard not to when they won't eat much else. I've tried breading and frying or baking chicken tenders for him, but they just aren't the same as the chicken nuggets.

Re: What are Some Things You Never Thought...
i never thought i'd be so relaxed about what i let him play with. if it makes him happy and won't electrocute him it's his!
i never thought i would plan around naptime. i figured he could fall asleep when/wherever little did i know!
i never thought i would let him eat whatever he wants - i was all set to only give him veggies, fruit and healthy proteins. but when he looked at my breakfast bar i couldn't resist!

Re: What are Some Things You Never Thought...
1. Chase my child around while he was playing/watching TV in order to feed him. (pre-baby I was insisting on DC being fed in the highchair)
2. be one of "those" moms that talks about her kid allllllll the time.
3. Actually want to give DS junk food, sweets just to see him smile at how delicious it is.

Re: What are Some Things You Never Thought...
I never thought I'd be the mom who you hear screaming "KNOCK IT OFF NOW!" through the open windows in the middle of the day... until my boys introduced me to how easy it is to lose your MIND when they are bickering and fighting for hours on end.
And I never thought I'd be the mom with the kids who bicker and fight all day!
I never thought I'd pick the last marshmallow off the floor and say "I don't care.. eat it if you want!!"
I never thought I'd let my child eat canned meat (think Chef Boyardee canned ravioli).
I never thought I would consider Milk and oatmeal cookies a compromise breakfast when you get up late and they haven't eaten.
I never thought I'd scream the words "YOU HACK! I TOTALLY got that note!!" at a tv screen while holding a miniature guitar in my hand.
I never thought I'd be so excited about little league games.
I never thought I would stop being such a self righteous, know it all who had all the answers bound up in a few books and research articles.
I never thought that I'd stop judging parents on how they choose to do things.. and instead start thinking that anyone with a happy, healthy and well loved child must be a fantastic parent. I'm glad I learned that particular lesson!

Re: What are Some Things You Never Thought...
I never thought that every single family member would try so hard to take over my role as his mother. I am still very certain that it is not for any perceived lack of skill on my part .

ditto on this, also valuing sitting down and eating in peace, usually my lunch is scarfed down while she's napping and in between laundry and cleaning... I never thought I get pizzed by ppl driving with loud music or loud motorcycles bc I'm scared she'll wake up or hating fireworks bc I'm scared she'll wake up...yes I'm a parent of a light sleeper

Same here. I always thought that 'they' had to adapt to our lifestyle and go with the flow.
Yeah it so doesn't work that way and Jacen has definitely let me know that.

That I would say to my DD "want a cookie?" just to get her to stop whining

Re: What are Some Things You Never Thought...
I thought I would make my own baby food-I just don't have the time.
Dress them in only stylish clothes. Most times I want them to be comfy and jeans don't seem that way-also its hard to find cool stuff unless you want to pay an arm and a leg
Be able to work from home and take care of them at the same time-HA! I need my babysitter here-I don't know how anyone does that?
I'm sure there are more!

Re: What are Some Things You Never Thought...
-DVD Player in the car! I was soooooo against that. Now that ours was stolen (jerks), I am desperate to save up the extra change so I can justify a new one.
-eating off the floor. DD doesn't even attempt it. however, DS doesn't care and I've learned boys will in fact be boys.
-"dictate" how my daughter's hair will be. after this last super short cut...that kid may never see scissors again!!
I still don't buy Elmo, Barney is still banned and I will not drive a mini-van.
