What are your thoughts on the "Big Bang" Experiment?

I am in NO WAY saying that the two earthquakes in Japan and Indonesia are a result of it; the experiment was simply the first thing to enter my mind after reading SweatestofPeas' post.

Do you think it will have repurcussions? Are you nervous that it will?

Do you think we will gain anything from this experiment? Are the possibilities of a "black hole" no matter how big or small worth the knowledge we may gain?

I am nervous b/c of it, and I think it is a pointless, waste of money to find out if there is a black hole--or whatever they r trying to prove...

There are particle collisions all the time, just now we get to observe them. We haven't fallen into a black hole in the last several billion years. A controlled, contained collision isn't going to cause anything...

It does seem like a lot of money, though....

ITA. As for the money, it was funded by 2,000 separate entities over more than a decade. The particle accelerator will be in use for many decades to come and will be used for many, many experiments. This wasn't all built just for one experiment, even though the lead off research they will do was in mind when they built it.

The media is completely mischaracterizing this entire thing. They are making people believe that it's the most dangerous thing on the planet and that it was only built for one experiment. That's not true. Also, it's widely accepted in the scientific community that this particle accelerator is totally safe. Unfortunately, the media is having trouble separating science fiction from the *real* science upon which sci fi is based. There is an enormous difference.

Some of the things they will be able to do with this particle accelerator are amazing and some of the theories they are investigating are fascinating. The experiments, though, are not going to bring about the end of the earth. Particle accelerators have been around for a while. This one is just better - particularly with respect to how quickly and efficiently it can cool (and how cold it can get). It may help lead the way in the future in experiements on cold fusion, too...

I think it's amazing and I am really interested to see what comes out of all these experiments. I'm also highly amused at some of the things I've read about this online. My all time favorite was the article about how it might enable us to finally have time travel. Chat Icon Sure, it *might* be able to prove that time is not absolute and is nonlinear and then after about 500 more years of research, we might have time travel... but I don't expect to be revisiting the '80s anytime soon (so teens can feel free to stop dressing like that.
