what are your thoughts on this name?
For a boy / man?
Dory
We have decided on this name for our son. We love it, its my husband's middle name and his grandfathers name (his first name was Isadore but everyone called him Dory)
My mother likes it too but feels I should consider naming him Isadore and then call him Dory, so he has an option when he is older. Isadore is not my favorite and I do not like Issy as a nickname. I also feel he will have to always correct people/teachers to call him Dory not Isadore.
What are your honest thoughts?
TIA for your help.

Re: what are your thoughts on this name?
If it were me, I'd name him Isadore and nickname him Dory.
My first thought was Finding Nemo, and I believe the Dory character was female, voiced by Ellen DeGeneres...so in my mind, Dory sounds feminine. Isadore sounds definitely masculine, and I agree that he might want the option when he gets older.

This. Dory sounds very girly. I'm just picturing him working in a business setting one day and introducing himself as Dory. I can't see it. Sorry

Eta - if you dont love isidore (not a fan of that either) can you use It as a middle name instead to still honor his grandfather?

I agree! I know one person name Dory and it's a girl. Doesn't sound one bit like a boys name. I would go with Isadore if your set on Dory.

Re: what are your thoughts on this name?
IMO, definitely no for a boy. It is VERY feminine. I know two Dorie's and they are both women. Not nicknames either, that is their full name. I also think "Finding Nemo".
I can see how it has meaning to your DH family and I would still definitely use it as a middle name if you want to pass it on.

Re: what are your thoughts on this name?
I am really sad by all of the replies. We have our heart set on Dory, but i do not want to make this kid feel like he always has to defend his name. It's funny because I feel like it sounds like a masculine name.
I am considering Isadore, but what other names can have the nickname Dory? I do like Theodore and think that he can be called Dory..
We cannot do Dorian, my DH has a cousin that name and DH does not like it though I do.

I like Theodore too But you'll have to know that when he gets older he will choose his own nickname and It may not be dory. (he can opt for theo, ted/teddy or dory). It's a name he won't need to explain and works well in a professional setting.
But if you love dory - use it Don't let our opinions sway you - we were just giving honest opinions on hearing that name for a man.
Eta - I feel like family/friends will like that name bc they will know the meaning behind it...but everyone else won't "get it" until it gets explained

I agree with all of this! If you have your heart set on the name, then name him Dory and teach him to be confident and proud of his name!
That said, you could put Isadore or Theodore on his birth certificate, but always call him Dory.

Re: what are your thoughts on this name?
I think Theodore is a great option. You can call him Dory and if he decides later in life that he doesn't want to be called Dory he has an option. Isadore is another option but is a very unusual name and I'm not a big fan..
So true what the other girl wrote about your family liking it because of the meaning but others not getting it. Of course it completely your decision, just are honest opinions on the name.

Re: what are your thoughts on this name?
I think of my friend Dorie who is a female. Granted the spelling is different but even so it sounds feminine to me. Sorry I would use it as a nickname instead. JMO
