What bulbs are you going to plant?

I don't think there are flowers I love more than spring bulbs. It makes the winter bearable to know there are sleeping beauties just waiting to dazzle me in the spring. Chat Icon

These are the purchases I'm considering from John Scheepers:

Sorry hon, you can't handle spring bulbs I think. They require a substantial cooling off period that I don't think you have!

Have you ever heard of forcing? Believe it or not, people plant these bulbs in pots and refrigerate them through the winter to fool them into blooming in spring. Chat Icon

Marigolds are for spring, typically they go outside after the golden date of May 15th - after which, the chance of frost is reduced. I had them one year, I started them as seeds and had a whole setup of heating pads, flats of pots I would water with a turkey baster. Chat Icon

Pansies are awesome too in spring, but since they're not perennials, I tend not to buy them.

This is why I love John Scheepers. I had no idea, honestly, but they've got it covered:

First, figure out your hardiness zone number.

If you find you're in zone 7, you've got a good chance of being able to plant these bulbs for warmer climates. I wouldn't spend too much money though, because it's a crap shoot with warmer zones, and how warm the winter might turn out to be.

Good luck!! Chat Icon

Re: What bulbs are you going to plant?

I am not a early Spring bulb person AT ALL. But you may have convinced me.

Did you use the place you ordered them from before? I am a bit concerned with catalog purchases.

Tricia-- I had no idea there were so many types of tulips. I inherited some with my garden, and I want to add more.

I've heard a lot about ordering bulbs. Can you not just walk in to a nursery & buy them? Do they not have the variety?

Re: What bulbs are you going to plant?

Yay Sophie! Chat Icon I've ordered hundreds from them over the years. All of the lilies in the back were from them - that's the Asiatic Lily Pastel Mixture, Asiatic Lily 'Lolipop', and Asiatic Lily 'Coral Sunrise'.

All of these tulips are from them also. They have another company, Van Engelen, which has similar stock and they're just as good.

Brecks I would stay away from. I ordered from them and was very dissapointed. They don't have a good reputation for making good on orders and customer service in years past.

I've bought bulbs off the rack at Franks too and you could get some good deals late in the season (November) for them. But depending on where you get them from, the selection may not be that great.

I like ordering from websites because they tell you, within 2 weeks, how early they'll bloom and how tall they'll be. So the anal organizer in me can design them so that as one batch is done flowering, the next batch is just starting. Chat Icon

That may "cost" you a lot of FMs. I have no ideas about planting bulbs. I always avoided them. Chat Icon
