What Color Do You Grade In?
I heard through the rumor mill once upon a time that teachers were encouraged and possibly actually banned from not grading in red ink...is that by any means true?
My teachers always graded in Red. I do remember a few instances of Green grading but primarily red was used.
Thanks for killing my curiosity!

Usually purple, though I am partial to green. We don't have a ban on red in my school, I don't like the way it makes my penmanship look. I did have a student teacher who came from a JHS where red ink was banned.

Whatever color I'm in the mood in! I do use red, but orange, hot pink, green, blue, purple, black, etc. I love the uniball pens!

Red always. I have a million red pens so that's all I use.
Besides I think it's incredibly stupid that they'd ban red ink... I can't imagine any logical reason for that whatsoever!!!

anything but red...i have bad flashbacks..haha...I once had someone in college proof a paper of mine and he knew about my red pen thing and played a gag on me on the paper..can't explain it, but red just doesn't make me feel good when I'm marking...

First, let me say I'm absolutely crazy.
At the start of each school year, I assign each period a class color.
This year:
Period 1 - Red
Period 2 - Orange/Yellow
Period 5 - Green
Period 7 - Blue
Period 9 - Purple/Pink
(I go in rainbow order so it looks pretty).
Then, when I grade the papers for a particular class, I use a pen of their class color and I know just by looking at the color, what period that student is in.
I also have their seating charts hanging on the wall in their class colors, and use color paperclips in my grade book to be able to see, at a glance, which period I'm opening to.
They love it though!

My chairperson doesn't like for us to grade in red. I grade in whatever color is available, usually blue. (I do like purple, but I can't hold onto those pens to save my life. I lose them constantly.) The kids joke, though, that if it's graded in red, it looks like their papers are bleeding. (Sometimes, they deserve for it to look that way.)

Wow! I thought I was organized! This is a great idea! I may have to try your system!
Usually I grade in whatever color I am in the mood to use.
I use red sometimes. I think not using red is rediculous!

the whole don't grade in red thing is BS. it won't kill their self esteem to see the 100 in red 
i grade in everything but black because that blends in to the page. sometimes green, but that's too light.
i prefer red or blue. i sometimes even use a thin marker in whatever color i have around

years ago when i taught in a catholic school we were told not to grade in red, apparently some parents or something said it was offensive to their culture, they were mostly haitian, ever since then i have never used red

I used to assign a grade level a color - but now its really whatever color is around. but rarely red. Early in my career, someone told me of a study about the color red and how it's traumatizing yada, yada, yada...so I stay away. If it's true - I don't want to be the one tormenting the kids!

I use whatever I can find.
For tests, I actually use Crayola magic marker. I like that the line is thicker, I think it stands out on the paper much more.
I've been known to use purple, orange, and green.
