What do I do? Work related...

I have a recent college graduate reporting to me who has been with our firm for the past 6 months. He is a smart kid, but his lack of experience is really getting to me. I have to constantly be on top of him, follow-up with him and remind him of things, never mind reviewing his work before it goes on to our attorneys...EVERYTHING is like pulling teeth! I don't feel like he is putting any effort into familiarizing himself with the position and is constantly focused on preparing for his LSATs which is fine but do it on your downtime.

What should I do? I already brought it up to my boss stating that he needs to be more involved and be a little more pro-active but I don't think he has mentioned anything to him...should I give it some time and see if he improves before I mention it to my boss again? I am also leaving on my maternity leave the third week of September and we're getting a temp to help him out but I don't think he'll be able to handle it even with the temp...

I'd probably talk to my boss again.

Who does he report to? ETA: whoops, sorry, I see he reports to you. Have you tried talking to him about his performance?

I'd talk to the boss again, and I would also start documenting all of his mistakes, etc. Then at least you will have proof if it comes down to letting him go.

ETA: If you are the supervisor I would talk to him.

Rather than approach your boss with it again, I would ask your boss how his/her conversation went with (Insert dopey's name here). Hopefully they'll either say it went well blah blah blah or they'll say they forgot all about it or just haven't had the time.
If they have spoken to that person then they may ask your feedback for how they've improved (or not) since the conversation. HTH!

I did. I tried to explain to him that he needs to be more involved and more pro-active, that he needs to familiarize himself with the position etc etc...maybe I just need to give it some time and see if he improves...and like some of you mentioned, I will start documenting "dopey's" (LOL perfect name for him actually) perfmormance, mistakes, etc...

Maybe proactive and involved is too vague for someone right out of college? I know what it means, but maybe some concrete examples would help him?

I agree that this might be the best approach. I do have an evaluation basis prepared but he won't get it until he makes his year here, which gives him 6 more months to shape up. However, I will speak to him once I have enough documented to show him that he needs to seriously shape up.

After 6 months I think he's been given enough of a "chance" that he should be starting to get things!

I would talk to your boss again.

Agree with this 100% Sylvia. His work eithic (or lack of) can be a reflection on you (his supervisor), unfortunately. I would defintatley speak to him. Documentation would definately be a plus.

Re: What do I do? Work related...

Sylvia - it sounds like he's just working to get some "experience" put on his resume. If he's studying for the LSATs his mind is in another place and is he focusing on another section of law?

All the talking from you or your boss in the world isn't going to get him focused if he's not there to study this area of law.

If he is studying to go into this area of law, it's probably best for you to sit down with him an explain that he has to give 100% when he's there, or he should consider working Part-Time.

I hate to play Devil's Advocate - but I can't blame the kid. When I was studying for the GMAT and thinking of going into another area of Finance...I came into work and just did whatever I had to as to not get fired. My mind was in another place all together.

Good point. I think the more specific you can be about what the expectations are the better job he can do and the easier it will be for you to evaluate him.

Re: What do I do? Work related...

Thanks ladies. I really appreciate all of your opinions...he's studying for the LSATs and if gets into law school he would not be starting until next year, and he will continue to work for us since my company would help to pay for his school...so he would really lose out on a lot if he got fired.

I am going to speak to him and give him a quick evaluation of his performance to date, my recommendations for improvement and my exact expectations of what is expected from his position.

Re: What do I do? Work related...

screw talking to your boss - he is obviously not helping.

call lsat slacker into a meeting with YOU - and explain to him that you think he is really bright and you think he can really accelerate but your not seeing any drive fromhim? is this what he wants to do in life? what are his goals? explain to him that no matter what job you have in life - do it the BEST possible way he can because it develops a persons character. tell him that you need more than what he is giving.

but - do this as a "friend" - do not be confrontational - do not bring up specifics unless he wants them. at that age i worked for a condecending boss and i did stuff just because he instilled fear in me - very uncool. it wasnt until i got a boss that acted like a mentor did i really enjoy my job and begin to kick azz @ it.

good luck...Chat Icon

Re: What do I do? Work related...

I would explain to this person that either he get focused and serious about work, OR you're going to have to speak to someone about it. Maybe if you "kindly" put a little fear into him, he'll buckle down. That would work on me, for sure.

I agree. Have you spoken to him about it? I woudl do that before speaking to my boss.

I woudl tell him that you will be doing his performance review and you are concerned about the sloppiness in his work. Express to him that everything needs to be checked over for spelling errors, etc...
