What do I need to know when buying a tent?
Any experienced campers out there that can help me? I've actually agreed to spend two nights out in the wild and need a tent impenetrable to bugs. What features should we look for and what should we avoid? Anything else I need to know? Where is the best place to get one?
I've never been camping before, can you tell?

I guess Sports Authority or D!cks Sporting Goods. I'm sure all tents are good, but comfort-wise, I would get one that is big enough for you to stand straight up in. Get cots too...sleeping on the ground is really "roughing it" and leaves you with a sore back the next day...
ETA: Target has tents too. Anything made by Coleman is good...
Oh yeah...another thing...they make something that you can line the seams with that really prevents water from coming in. I don't know the name of it though..

Make sure it's water resistant.

make sure it's waterproof and has screen "windows" as well as the waterproof covering.
you don't have to go too crazy. anyone at a sporting goods store can steer you in the right direction.
Coleman is a good brand.

Some have rain guards that go over the top. Some places may suggest you water proof it before you go.

Re: What do I need to know when buying a tent?
In my experience, they never fit the # of people they say they do - I have a 4 person tent that really sleeps 2 comfortably, 3 a little snug. If they have one set up, go inside to get an idea of how big it is.
Even if the tent is supposed to be waterproof, you should still use the waterproofing treatment on it. Sadly, I learned this the hard way, after a looong night.

Get one where the rain guard is seperate from the tent and covers it to the ground. If it rains, the condensation will run on the outside.
