What do "real" contractions feel like???

Started today, feeling something much like painful period "cramps", all over my lower belly and by my hiney (sorry) along with a sharp pain in my hiney (again, sorry). It intensified when I stood up, and tried walking to see if it would get better. It did not really subside, and I was out of breath from the cramps.

Were these contractions?

I am 33w today. If they are contractions, is it "too soon", will/can these last a while before labor really begins?

Sorry for my 101 questions, but dont want to call the Dr, as I was specifically told "You have time" and "If you're having contractions 10 min apart or more, you've got time" Problem is....I don't know that what I am feeling is contractions or just growing cramps!

TIA!!!

Im not sure since I am like you, no clue on the contraction thing but maybe what you are feeling is, some stretching twinges or maybe you are dehydrated which then causes, braxton hicks, a false labor feeling.

I get those. I am assuming they are braxton hicks b/c they are not regular AT ALL and I mainly get them when I am really tired, dehydrated or have over-exerted myself.

Someone told me Braxton Hicks do not hurt, but mine definately did.

If they seem to become regular, then I'd call your doctorChat Icon

I don't know if this is helpful but at the lamaze class we were told that..

Real contractions - start in your lower back and move across to lower area of your belly. They are usually 30 to 40 seconds and rythmic.

Braxton Hicks contractions - start in your lower back and move to the top of your belly. They are not consistent and can be relieved by changing positions. They go away.

If your having them ALL day, no break....Then I would call.

It does sound like contractions to me.

I would be nervous at 33 weeks....

For me, even early contractions HURT like really bad cramps ....

My only concern is with you, if you start to dilate , the Dr's should be watching you at 33 weeks to make sure you dont lose fluid and or get an infection.

You could reasonably dialate a small amount for the next few WEEKS and it should be monitored.

I would mention that to the Dr. And Dont take any Baths till your sure your cervix is not opening.

For me I knew it was real contractions when the pain started to radiate in my lower back and then across my belly. It also took my breathe away for a few secs. Even when you move around you will still feel them.

Re: What do "real" contractions feel like???

I dont think it's Braxton Hicks, b/c I have had them and this is different. It MAY be dehydration, but at my last appt on 3/7 they said according to my urine I was a little dehydrated, and I've been trying hard to drink LOTS of water.

I am trying to monitor how long they last and how far apart they are. Last ones were about 10 min. Not TOO worried, but I am afraid I won't know if they are contractions or not!

That's how this is feeling. Even when I move, I still feel it and I feel like after like 1 min or so I cant' breathe.

I would definitely try to time them then. I started getting them early also, but never more than 2 or 3 contraction in an hour. I'd say if the contractions happen for at least 1.5 to 2 hours in regular intervals of 10-15 min to definitely call your doc.

ETA: Try relaxing and drinking some water to see if that helps. Since this is your first, so ahead and call your doc to see what they say.

I would call the doctor just to be sure.

If you are drinking and moving around and the pain is not stopping, you should call.

Re: What do "real" contractions feel like???

Definately call the doctor. I have been having contractions for a few weeks now, even 10 minutes apart for 3 hours straight one night, and I haven't gone into labor. But the doctor may want to monitor the contractions and possibly give you some fluids to see if that helps. 33 weeks is too soon and they will probably want to do something to stop the contractions if they persist.

Thanks, they are still here, not AS intense, or frequent, but still there.
