what do they test for?
So I had my D&C as a last resort and I think they are sending stuff in to be tested. I got a letter from whoever they sent it to talking about insurance...but when do I get results? What is it going to tell me??

Re: what do they test for?
I believe that they test for any chromosomal abnormalities, but am unsure if they can test for anything else.
I received my results back about 3-4 weeks after my D&C and they were able to tell me that the baby had an entire extra set of chromosomes.

Re: what do they test for?
I dont think they tested mine. Is it really necessary? I guess if it happened more then once I would want to know but honestly, for this one, I dont want to know anything. It is what it is.

Re: what do they test for?
Our testing told us of an extra chromosome which supposedly was random. We were told the basic results by the ob/gyn and actually met with the genetic counselors that did the testing. They took family histories and were able to give us estimates of the possibilities of complications in the future.
Although I was destraught to find out we lost a baby boy with trisomy 21 (down's syndrome), it helped me to hear the results. I finally had an actual reason that the miscarriage occurred, so I could stop driving myself crazy with the "what ifs" and self-blame.
Not everyone gets a real answer to their miscarriage questions through testing though. It should find any genetic abnormalities if there is enough tissue to test. The doctor called with our results in about a week and a half. The following week we meet with the genetic counselors.
Best wishes!

Re: what do they test for?
My doctor told me that she was planning on having some of the tissue tested, unless I objected, which I didn't. They did find an extra chromosome which caused the miscarriage. It was hard to hear at first, especially since she told me that it was a boy. But it did clear my head of any thoughts that it was something I did or could have prevented.

Re: what do they test for?
They check for chromosomal deficiency...but you aren't always going to get an answer. Sometimes it only reads as normal female tissue (your own tissue) which is the result from my first D&C.

They did find an extra chromosome which caused the miscarriage. Same here. I wanted to know why, if they could find out. It was my first & I wanted to do whatever I had to, to prevent future M/c.

This was my reasoning for having it done. It made me feel better that I couldn't have prevented it but not it kinda makes me nervous bc I have no control over what happens in my next pregnancy. Scary feeling!

Re: what do they test for?
My second m/c was "normal female tissue", which was probably just me.
The third m/c was a son that had downs syndrome.
I was glad to find out that it was downs syndrome and not something I did or didn't do. I have mixed feelings about knowing it was a boy (I peaked in my chart, no one told me).

Re: what do they test for?
I just want to clarify something, in case anyone is reading this thread who received D&C results that said there was no chromosomal problem and their 1st-trimester miscarriage is "unexplained." Just because there was no chromosomal problem does NOT mean that the miscarriage was caused by "something you did or did not do." There are many, many things beyond your control like clotting and autoimmune disorders that you may never know you have and that doctors, for some inexplicable reason, do not want to test people for unless they've had at least three miscarriages. So there's really no need to be blaming ourselves here.
