Re: What do you consider to be making a "good" living
You claim married on your tax form. Definitely don't mess with that.
But you don't have to claim married on your W4. You can be married and still claim single zero on your W4 which tells the job to take out the maximum amount of tax they can.
But I have to change to married-11 once I get the house anyways.

Re: What do you consider to be making a "good" living
What is sad is that my DH and I make a great living- if we lived somewhere other than S. CA where houses cost over 700000.

Question about this- I have been trying to reach my accountant and need to file these papers this week. When should you claim married but filing seperately? Thanks

Re: What do you consider to be making a "good" living
You can do either or.
Married filing jointly. Or Married filing separately.
The idea is... to find out which way you have to file that pays you the bigger refund.
I am not joking either. Do the math. First crunch the numbers using TurboTax filing separately. Then do it filing jointly.
Pick whichever one has you paying less taxes.
Repeat next year. You can file separately even if you are living together.
But I think the rule is (I thought I read this somewhere)... if one person itemizes... the other person must itemize as well. That may make a big difference.
I have been doing my own taxes since the start... even with the mortgage. But check with an account to be certain cause I am not an expert when it comes to the "married" part.

Re: What do you consider to be making a "good" living
we're ok for NOW. we are renting... we have bills, but we do go out alot.. and i love that.
ask me when i'm trying to save up for a house or something!
we dont have any money saved though. we live from check to check, but we're never broke really. unless by some thursdays i am eating Top Ramen, but really we are ok. if we just put the money that we use going out towards savings we would be doing even more OK!

enough where all the bills are paid...all items needed are purchased...and there is still money left over to put towards the future/retirement....maybe even a 2nd home someplace warm.

For me "good" living means not living check to check. Being able to pay all bills, save money (emergencies, retirement, and college for kids), travel, entertainment, etc.....
I feel this way too. We are pretty much in this situation.

I agree. To me it's a bit more than just paying the bills. Making a "good living" includes all those things steph said and having some money left over for the occassional splurge on a cool new toy or something.

I claimed single zero for the first couple of years we wer married. However, once the refund checks became larger, I realized I would be better off having the money for myself rather than the government keep it from me for zero interest.

Re: What do you consider to be making a "good" living
A salary where all bills are paid, you can comfortably take a vacation once or twice a year, have food in the refrigerator and spurgle on clothing, gifts once in awhile...
And have a nice sum of money saved in the bank account for the future, in case of emergency, unexpected repairs....etc...
