What do you know about babies with high lead levels?
DH was just telling me that his friend's son, who is 2, has high levels. The friend going test everything in his home, even toys, to minimize future exposure. What do you know about this? What precautions do you take? We won't go too crazy but DH is going to test things now, too.

They test lead levels at 1 & 2. I believe you can pay to have your home tested, I think it is $500.00.

The Health Dept. does lead testing, at least they do in Suffolk County. I believe they only go out if they have a positive blood test (someone's house was tested and it turned out to be the tiles in the bathroom that were imported from Italy....it cost thousands and it had to ripped out). I can try to find out the details if you'd like (I work in a different unit but I'm friends with someone in that unit).

DH said something about a kit from Home Depot and about being able to test individual things like toys. I'll post more info if I get any.

Oh, you just reminded me, someone once came to my office b/c they were trying to sell this kind of testing to lawyers who handle toxic tort cases. I guess the idea was that people whose kids have lead poisoning could figure out who to sue. Too bad the guy did not do a simple search online before coming to see me. I don't do any of those cases. ETA: It should not surprise me that the guy was selling something that could be done through the county.
