What do you put on bulletin boards in the beginning of the year?

I dont have any kid work...and my principal is HUGE on bulletin boards...

any suggestions would be helpful!

How about something with math vocab? I do a word wall with vocab printed on different colored cardstock w/ illustrations. You could make words and use them somehow on your board now (maybe something about what you will learn this year?), and once you take it down to display student work you could bust out the words again as you encounter them in class and display them around the room (I find this to really help them use vocab consistently.)

Until I get student work I have posters such as

Why Study History
10 Ways to be a good citizen
Flags of all 50 states

I'm also putting up a National Treasure Movie Poster

I try to generate some sort of student work early on at least in time for back to school night.

I don't know if your principal would go for this but I always have kids do things the first day of school that can go on the bulletin boards. I have lots of cute back to school activities and getting to know you activities. It helps me set expectations and gives me stuff for the boards.

If you have to have something before then, I would do a skill you're going to be teaching or preview a unit you'll be teaching soon with pictures and vocab.

I make motivational type posters on the computer. I also do alot of "welcome" stuff.

nothing.

they are blank for at least a week or 2. my district does not like preprinted posters. they want student work.

in my class there's nothing to hang up until at least the second week. we try to get something up by meet the teacher night.

My principal is also a stickler for bulletin boards- she makes up leave them blank. We must get work up there by the next week. It is pretty standard..what did you do this summer? what do you think ... grade will be like? How can you be a good friend?


I like seeing what the children have to write. This year I am in self-contained so this could get interesting!

I have a word wall, reading corner (with word strategies and vowels), birthday board, weather/seasons and calendar board.
