What's wrong with saying you are looking for a new opportunity that is more local....you have had some life changes you need to accomodate.

I usually say I am looking for career advancement. ITA. And depending on the industry that type of movement can be expected at certain times.
I work in Magazine Publishing, and if you last at a place for a year without a promotion and without moving on (at certain levels, of course) people start to wonder

Re: what do you say when asked why do you want to leave your current job
I would say that I've reached my peak at my current company, there is no room for advancement, and that I'm looking for new challenges.

Re: what do you say when asked why do you want to leave your current job
I left a job due to the commute. I was honest with my employer and they kept me per diem so I go in occasionally to help them out. Why is saying location a bad thing if it's the truth?

Re: what do you say when asked why do you want to leave your current job
i intervewed at one place on LI and my recruiter told me don't say it's because it's close to home- he said that the last guy that interviewed said that and it made it seem like they are looking for an easier job, etc., and not necessarily looking to contribute alot.

Re: what do you say when asked why do you want to leave your current job
At my last job they knew I was unhappy and they did not really ask. I left a job in the city and they actually told me to tell the person replacing me that I was leaving because of the commute.

Re: what do you say when asked why do you want to leave your current job
Tell the truth, but without bad-mouthing your current boss and company. I'm an HR Manager, and when I ask that question it's because I want to know if the candidate is going to encounter the same issues with us that s/he did with his/her last job.
Making something up or trying to "spin" your answer doesn't do you or your potential employer any good.
