What do you send as a sympathy/bereavement gift?

DH's uncle passed away from Lou Gherig's disease. They are only having a memorial service at the church, no funeral. What should I bring to his aunt or send?

My mother suggested a donation to the Lou Gherig's foundation. Flowers are out b/c they are not having a funeral. What about an edible arrangement?

What about a breakfast basket? I've sent this for a few different occassions (including a funeral) and the people loved it. Call your local bakery and see if they can do it for you. My bakery put bagels, donuts, scones, muffins, etc.

Food platters are great because with all of the people stopping by there is no time for cooking. Think sandwich platters, maybe you could bring a frozen tray of food, so she won't have to cook.

ETS: I didn't realize flowers were out-I sent them to the family, as well as the edible arrangements.

I would send a donation for now and maybe some pre-cooked food in a week or two. DH's aunt may be overwhelmed with food right now.

When my mom & grandma passed we recieved food & edible arrangements. It was very nice because with the food we recieved, we froze some, and didn't have to cook for a few weeks it seemed.

definitely food. i love edible arrangements. i've sent them and received them for sympathy gifts. also gift cards for restaurants in their areas so they don't have to cook is always good too.

when my grandparents die my parents were so distraught to cook. my mom's friends send lasagnas, her cousin sent a cheese and fruit basket from harry and david's. it is just nice to not have to think about making a meal and you get sick of fast food/eating out.
