Thought of another one too.
Community College can be a great thing. You don't HAVE to go immediately to a 4-year school. There are so many scholarships available for transfer students as well. They can save about $40,000 by going to a Community College first if they have a program that their ultimate college accepts. Their degree will still say XX College, and they'll save a ton of cash in the long run.
This is a great point. They should look for schools that have an articulation agreement with the school they want to eventually attend.

The best thing I did was take English 101 and 102 over a summer semester at Nassau. Since the semester was only about a month long the term paper due at the end of the class was only a few pages. I was so glad my dad made me take this class and get it out of the way. I remember my friends had huge papers to do over the three month semester in addition to all of their other work.
Get everything in WRITING and signed by your advisor. If they tell you they will transfer a class or accept credits for something get it in writing put a copy in your file and save a copy for yourself. This saved me so many times.

That you should go see as many colleges as possible - away and home. big and small. no one did that for me and I messed up big time...wound up staying home when all i wanted to do was go away

I wish I would have been more proactive about attending classes more often. I found that instructors will give you a fighting chance even if your grades are not so great...if you show up to class. Not showing up is pretty much giving up!
I wish I also would have known to be organized and prioritize better.
