What exactly is an internal towards the end of pregnancy?
I'm kind of afraid to know what lies ahead but I hear so much about it and how painful it is.
What exactly do they do and what is the purpose of an internal towards the end?
Is it the same kind of internal (sono) I am thinking during the 1st trimester?

It is when the doctor checks if you are dilated and/or effaced.

Basically the doctor checks by using his/her fingers. It is uncomfortable... but not really really painful.

I had two so far. It's not painful at all just a little discomfort and over in 10/15 seconds.
Just want to add that you may spot after it ( I never have so far) and you will feel a slight crampy feeling. That feeling will go away.

I have had three so far. They havent been painful at all except one that I had done at the hospital. It wasnt painful, just uncomfortable - it felt like she fisted me. sorry, tmi but she really got in there!!

I agree with the others. It's not really painful just uncomfortable and over in 10 seconds.
