What foods/additives are you avoiding?
Beyond the obvious things like sushi (which I hate anyway) and deli meat (which I don't miss) what are some things you've eliminated from your diet?
One of my friends told me not to eat peanuts or peanut butter because it makes the baby more likely to have a peanut allergy (which is a scary one to have). But I'm getting to the point where the idea of meat is making me queasy, and I don't know what else I'd do for protein.
She also told me to not use artificial sweetners, even Splenda. Anyone know if these are safe? I've been using sugar in my daily cup of tea but I worry about too much sugar too.

Re: What foods/additives are you avoiding?
The only thing I have avoided completely is raw sushi. Everything else I've had in moderation- deli meats, gorgonzola, fresh mozzarella, caffeine, hot dogs, etc... My DR. never mentioned anything about nuts or peanut butter, so I eat it as often as I'd like.

The only things I avoid are raw fish (sushi and shellfish AKA clams) and Splenda. Everything else is fair game

Re: What foods/additives are you avoiding?
I did give up artificial sweetners. To me it just wasn't worth the risk when I could just drink water or regular soda or use sugar. I didn't give up peanut butter though even though I have heard that myth. I really don't know how true it is. Almost all my friends at PB while pregnant and BFing and none of the kids have peanut allergies. You are supposed to wait until 2 (i think) to give it to your children to help avoid the allergy. We use almond butter instead. I didn't eat deli meat until the 3rd trimester (I was paranoid). Next time around I'm sure I'll eat it because honestly when is the last time you heard of listeria from deli meat and as far as the nitrates go if you aren't eating a ton every day that's not an issue either. By my 3rd trimester's end I was even eating sushi, the raw stuff. I figured the kid was done baking at that point and a little raw fish couldn't do much harm. Hmmm can't think of anything else I gave up I guess that's why I gained 40 pounds

Re: What foods/additives are you avoiding?
I fully expected to give birth to a peanut since I had PB&J EVERY day for lunch when I was pregnant! No problem.
To be honest, I never avoided anything except alcohol and too much caffeine...at that I had at least 1 cup of coffee per day; in fact, my baby demanded coconut flavored Dunkin Donuts iced coffee about 4x per week! I also had the occasional glass of wine after the first trimester (maybe 5- 6 glasses in total during the pregnancy).
Never ate raw fish anyway, so that wasn't an issue. I think we can drive ourselves crazy sometimes. I truly believe everthing (well, most things) in moderation.

I avoided caffeine. Other than that, I ate cold cuts because my Dr. said it was ok. I also had the occasional hot dog.

Don't eat seafood so never had to worry about that. The only obvious thing I avoided was alcohol. Everything else is all about moderation. You can make yourself crazy thinking everything you put in your mouth is going to harm your baby. I say talk to your Dr. and don't listen to what anyone else has to say.

Re: What foods/additives are you avoiding?
I actually asked my OB about those 2 specific things......he said to avoid PB only if peanut allergies runs on either side of the family and that splenda is fine. He also said that Boar's Head cold cuts were fine as long as you don't eat them every day! I avoid the unpasturized cheeses completely and sushi. Every DR has a different theory.....I would ask yours. HTH
ETA: I have a cup of coffee every AM, I can't help but indulge in hotdogs, and haven't had a lick of alcohol, although it's funny....I've been craving a beer.....I have NEVER been a beer drinker. So weird!

I agree with everything you posted (except I don't have coffee every day and I don't have beer cravings )
ETA: I don't eat fish or sushi, so that's never been an issue for me

Re: What foods/additives are you avoiding?
I avoid fish. I asked my OB about PB the other day and he said its fine. I make sure my meat is cooked really good and all cheeses are pasteurized. I have one glass of caffiene a day, only if I really really want it. As for deli meats, OB said it was fine as long as its from a reputable place. I only get Boarshead.

I thought the peanut allergy thing was only likely to happen if you have a tendency to have food allergies...

Re: What foods/additives are you avoiding?
I gave up alcohol, artifical sweetners, deli meat, hot dogs, soft cheeses, caffeine, and fish (although I don't ever eat fish.)
I do have a very occasional turkey sandwich and I've had one hot dog...but other than that I'm pretty careful what I eat.
Never considered giving up nuts or peanut butter (I love them!!) and I'm sure I get some of the above foods mixed into meals and I don't even know it...

It really depends. I avoid Splenda even when not pregnant and I refuse to let my kids eat anything that has it in it. Im not a huge fan of altered food products... Changing a molecule of sugar makes Splenda. Just like NurtaSweet and Equal who would have thought that in large quantities they would be bad for you...

Re: What foods/additives are you avoiding?
I have one small cup of coffee a day and I eat deli meats that have been cooked as opposed to only cured- like turkey and ham but no pepperoni, etc.
I do not eat unpasteurized foods but I have the occasional hot dog and the very occasional splenda. Peanut butter I have whenI feel like it.
