What happens at a Kindergarten Screening?

For those of you who have gone through it, what did they ask your child? Is this a "pass/fail" kind of thing or more of a "placement" kind of thing? Were you allowed to be there while they did it? TIA!

Re: What happens at a Kindergarten Screening?

They didn't allow us parents in when my DS did it, so I am trying to remember the little he told me about it Chat Icon

He said they asked him some questions, he had to do some jumping of some sort (physical activity type thing) and I know my neighbors DS told her that they had him count coins ....

I think its more of a placement type thing...

Also, while he was in with the teachers, the parent sat with the guidance counselor, answered some q's about DC's development and any areas we felt he may need help with etc....Chat Icon

It's for placement so the schools can make heterogeneous classes. Nothing to worry about at all. Chat Icon

Re: What happens at a Kindergarten Screening?

In my district we use the DIAL-3...its a screening tool that has a part for the kids to answer questions that assess motor, language and concept skills, then a parent part that assesses self help and social skills. Its really just a tool that helps with placement, so that kids are placed in balanced classrooms.

DD is in universal pre-k

I was told she needs to:
know her full name
birthday
address w/ zip code
phone number
alphabet and identify all letters by sight
know all body parts
count to 30

she's pretty much solid w/ all of this as we have been practicing.

I have to ask - what do you mean "needs to know"? There are no requirements for entering Kindergarten, other than age!

When I taught K, I had MANY kids in my class who did not know 1/2 of what you have on your list!

Last year DD went through it. She had to do some puzzles, set up some patterns based on what the teacher told her, identify body parts, write her name, identify some letters and numbers, do some physical activities (running, jumping, hopping, skipping)

It sounds like a lot here, but it went pretty fast.

I have no idea!
The sheets that come home say that this is what they look for when they "test" for Kindergarten...

Re: What happens at a Kindergarten Screening?

Most of the above sound like the Dial 3. We use that in our school too. It is a 3 part test usually w/ 3 different teachers/psychiatrist; about 15-20 minutes each section. The parents are NOT allowed to be w/ their child during the screening.

Re: What happens at a Kindergarten Screening?

In our district, this screening doesn't happen until they've actually started school. They said it's sometime in October.
