What is considered an elevated Down's risk after ultrascreen?

Not asking for me, but a friend...

What do your odds need to come out as to be considered an elevated risk? Is it 1:250? Or would it vary with age? What percentage risk might they want someone to get an amnio?

Is it automatically an elevated risk if your risks gets higher than the standard risk for your age?

Thanks

It could vary with age. Before my ultrascreen, my chances were 1 in 176 at the age of 37. After the ultrascreen, the went to 1 in 314 and after the AFP they went to 1 in 354(ish - can't remember the numbers exactly). I became a decreased risk. I still had an amnio but was not guided by my numbers despite the fact my odds decreased. There were other factors.

Thanks Goldi, my risk also improved after my bloodwork..But I could swear there is a ratio that if anyone falls into, they are automatically an elevated risk. I think it's 1:250 or greater, but I am not sure...trying to find this out.

I was never given a ratio, I was just told I had the chances of a 20 year old. The doctor showed me a chart that had my chances based on age and how it dropped after the testing.

ETA: I think I have read 1:300 is considered the cutoff for elevated risk.

Is that what the cutoff means? I didn't know that, can you explain cutoff to me a bit more?

So if the cutoff is 1:301, that means let's say, 1:299 would be a screen positive result?

And also, does the cutoff vary with age or does a particular office use the same cutoff for all age patients?

Thanks KatieChat Icon

I think my Dr. said the cutoff was 1:275 or 1:273 at that point, they would recommend an Amnio.

My dr. rec an amnio when my results came back 1/240. For my age (27) it should be 1/900.

By cutoff I mean if my results came back at 1:270 or less (ie 1:269) they would rec an amnio. I wouldn't call it a "screen positive" since the ultrascreen is not a diagnostic test but simply a screen that may indicate there is an issue.

I know that the screen is based on varying factors such as age, race, weight etc which is why you will hear women say "I got good results for my age" but in my case the info about 1:270 was on a standard form given to everyone so I know in my office that is the magic number across the board for recommending an amnio or more invasive testing. Hth!
