What is expected for 3/4yr old in school?

I have twin boys they are about 3 1/2 (Oct birthday) We will probably hold them back in school.

What is expected for Pre-K? and then Kindergarten?

My boys have colors, shapes & 1-10 numbers down. I even have one boy that can spell his first name, give telephone # & address.
We do work sheets daily at home. Please send any info my way that you can.

What is expected for 3/4yr old in school?

In Pre-K she learned how to write all capital letters and numbers 1-10. She knew letters and colors before starting but learned the writing and even sight words. My DD is also an Octbday and I never considered holding her back, she would have been so bored. In K they are beginning to read now and have reviewed writing upper and lower case letters. They are also beginning to add.

Thanks so much.
As far as holding back, I have two boys-twins.
All educators I meet advise me to hold them "Red shirt" as they call it because boys are immature.
Will see how it goes, but right now this is what my husband wants.

HOnestly, that is why I didn't respond. They are 3.5 and you have already decided to red shirt children two months away from the cut-off. This red-shirting really has gotten out of control. It's sad. If you are so concerned with them learning and being challenged you should put them in the school year they belong. far better than anything you can do with them at home. why push them ahead just to hold them back? Do you think that is fair to them? just my two cents.

I find it odd that they are saying to hold them back before they have even done pre-K and this early without knowing how they will mature. My DS is an October baby and I'm so glad I didn't listen to anyone and went with my gut. He was enrolled in all day kindergarten in catholic school. I didn't hold him back and he has even got the bored in 1st grade this year, I can't imagine him in Kindergarten. Boys are different from girls but I think the stereotype is starting to hold a lot of boys back.

I say you still have time decide, 3.5 is different from 4 and 5, they change so much. My DS changed so much in a matter of 2 months.

To answer your question - I think they already know stuff they will be learning in Pre-k. My DS never did formal pre-k but my nieces did, and they did letters, numbers, shapes, writing their names, letter sounds to prepare them for reading, some sight words.

Kindergarten is what 1st grade used to be for us. Pre-K was definitely a good prep. It's a lot but it sounds like you have a good handle on it.

I remember M starting with calendar time. They would sit in a circle each morning, talk about what season it was and then say the month, day, year. Talk about the weather, if anyone was having a special day..

The would do centers for a portion of the time, circle time again for reading, if it was nice outside and the kids were cooperating they got to go on the play ground. The last 15 minutes was for snack time.

Rainbow tracing was big. They started with all capital letters then in the spring they transitioned to both. They also were spelling their names too.

Towards the end of the year I think they did some math too.

Our UPK is now full day so i'm not sure how much more they added or if maybe it's more relaxed. It seemed like such a busy 2 1/2 hours for them.

Kindergarten was more reading at the beginning of the year, now the focus seems to be math.

In response to the red shirting....I have one that is in therapy for behavior (although not really an issue) and my other son is delayed physically. Accademically they will be fine. I would rather them be ahead then not. The birthday is 10/28. There must be a reason why teachers suggest this. I didn't start this topic for a debate on red shirting. I just was curious about the curriculm (sp) I am in East Meadow & we still don't have full day K so this worries me with common core.

I would actually prefer half day. IMO it's too much for them. It seems like you cover most of what they would be doing in Pre-K. For K what they do, atleast in my district, is gym daily. The class gets split in half so while half is at gym the other half has reading.

Does EM have UPK? There were a number of kids who weren't able to identify all or even most of their letters in her class. I was really surprised.

I would do what you think is best for them. I hear of more and more people red shirting.

Re: What is expected for 3/4yr old in school?

Your 3.5 year olds know more then my almost 5 year old. Chat Icon But I'm not worried. They are really not expected to be reading and writing for kindergarten. My DS has known his colors and shapes forever, can count to 100, can write his name and knows his address. We're still working on his letter recognition, but he'll get there. He does get OT and PT twice a week. I'm going to attempt to get them to continue OT in kindergarten, but I know the PT will end.
My older DS probably knew even less or about the same, but he was younger going into kindergarten. His bday is 10/26 but I never considered holding him back. I don't want to debate with you about red shirting, so I will just share my personal experience. My DS was always very intelligent- able to communicate well beyond his years, very expressive. The downside of that is he can be very emotional, which used to lead to tantrums. I even had him at a behavioralist at 4, which honestly did nothing. He was just not an easy kid. In a lot of ways he's still not an easy kid, but with age and maturity he's come a LONG way and he's an amazing little boy. He remains one if the youngest and he's in 3rd grade now. He has always done well academically and continues to, all with an ADD Inattentive diagnosis. I would have done him a disservice to hold him back. He really does excel in school and even in sports.
If I we're you, I wouldn't be so hasty to make a decision. Kids change and grow so much in a short amount of time. You still have another year until you even need to consider this. I would take a wait and see approach instead of rushing a decision now.

Re: What is expected for 3/4yr old in school?

Honestly, as much time as you are putting into the curriculum I would put into the decision to red shirt. If you hold back an academically advanced kid and they are super bored in the classroom THAT creates behavior issues. As well as the child feeling out of place socially and developmentally. I have seen this first hand and heard this from the teachers in our district as well as family members that are teachers. When my DS first started school red shirting bothered me because I felt bad for him as the youngest in the class. Now that he is in second grade I realize that it makes no difference as you can no longer tell the red shirted kids they have all been "dumbed down". Actually he is the smartest in the class, very good at sports and all around doing amazing despite being the youngest boy. Now, I see red shirting from a different angle - how unfair it is to these poor kids that shouldn't be held back and it makes me mad honestly. In some cases it can be the right thing but, there is a very big downside too and I see it first hand. If you haven't heard this than I would do more research. I will also tell you - red shirting is the hardest on the academically advanced child so if your kid is being held back I would ease up on the worksheets

Re: What is expected for 3/4yr old in school?

Well my dd is in kindergarten and in school she writes sentences, is given c/d level readers, does addition and subtraction, counts to 100, counts by 2s, 5s, and 10s, recognizes colors, shapes, follows directions, calendar time, draws circles, triangles, squares.
The things that surprised me the most is the actual story writing component. They are expected to write stories with a beginning, middle, and end using descriptive language. They are ok that the story is five sentences but it really shocked me. Spelling is focused on that they should recognize beginning and ending sounds.

As for red shirting, if your children receive therapies they may be denied services if you redshirt. My dd is born the day before the cut off. We decided to send her. I was very nervous about it, but it was absolutely the right decision. My son is now in second and also born close to the cutoff, two months before. I can say that second is what third used to be.

I would hold off on the decision to redshirt until the spring before kindergarten. Kids grow up so much between three and four.

Actually in kinder they are absolutely expected to read and write sentences and as someone else said even write basic sentences or responses to stories. So much more is expected in k from even 3-4 yrs ago

We are in EM too - mine missed the cut off by 15 days (December baby) I put him in private school -- more for socialization / structure and would have been happy if the basics were picked up. He was so "over ready" he wound up doing a K program at the private school and will go to K ready. I think it all depends on the kid.

Redshirting should NOT be done on the basis of your child's birthday. It should be done if there truly is an issue that would prevent them from thriving in a class with their peers. I wouldn't trust a teacher that told me to red-shirt my kid before they even started Pre-K. That is ridiculous.

I agree!
I think that was our point, not to start a debate but let you know from moms that been there that it is way to early to have a definitive answer in whether you will hold them back. They may need to but it's still too early and they will change so much over the next year and a half.

To be honest that is what my DS new going into Kindergarten, granted he was a little behind but caught up by December. And yes in kindergarten they start reading and it is heavy in math but I don't think they are expected to know how to read when they start. The kids who knew how to read going into Kindergarten were considered advanced.

pre-k standards

This page will take you to the Common Core Standards for Kindergarten

The above links will give you an idea of what is expected in each grade.

IMHO, it is very early to know what your boys will be ready for 1 1/2 years from now. Kid mature a lot during pre-k.

DD is in Pre-K.

Every week her homework is to work on one lower case letter a week. They have to cut pictures out of magazine that start with a specific letter of the week and then they have to present their sheet to the class.

They also practice writing numbers.

They are learning how to spell some states in schools...I know they recently memorized Mississippi.

She recently brought home a worksheet with some basic math problems 1+3, 2+2 ...not for homework...just a few problems they worked on as a class

They practice their name, address, phone number and they learned the pledge.

You are going to get opinions on it regardless if you asked for them or not. That is par for the course when discussing this stuff with other adults. If my friend asked me this question in real life, I would comment on why she is choosing to red shirt her kids when they aren't even in pre-k. I agree. This OP highlights exactly the reason why I loathe red-shirting - because more and more it is about the PARENTS wanting to achieve a competitive edge and NOT the kids at all. I know a few parents that say they are red-shirting their Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov babies - before they are even 2! I could go on and on but, when that is the motivation - why bother - not about the kid at all so any advice we have to offer is pretty useless.

You can't dictate what people post on a message forum. Speaking from my perspective I clearly answered your question and just gave you my experience from a been there mom of a 6yr old boy that they change. I don't understand where the defensiveness is coming from. The majority of us just told you that you have time. I also told you what they learn in preK and what he learned in Kindergarten.

I really believe the educators you are talking to are really jumping the gun. Trust me I am not against holding a child back if need be. My stepson was one of those children. However, I feel you have a lot of impatient educators and counsellors ready to hold kids back and the majority are boys. Just because they mature slower or hyper, as a mom of a boy be wary of that.

They need to develop the love of learning at this age. They need to listen to stories and begin to understand story structure, directionality, and patterns. They should learn to retell a story, figure out the problem and how it was solved. They should learn to tell their own stories. You could write their stories down under their pictures and then read them back to them. Use everyday objects to teach mathematical thinking. Forget the worksheets, they will have a lifetime of worksheets.
